Maintenance Mystery

Hi guys, I'm looking for some maintenance advice.

When I bought my truck (@155k), I had a carfax done on it and everything looked good so I decided to buy it. The previous owner had regular maintenance done at Pep Boys, which was where I was taking my truck at the time. I figured I'd be able to obtain records from the Pep Boys on the maintenance history, but come to find out, Pep Boys refused to give me the history on the vehicle for confidentiality reasons. Unfortunately for me, the previous owner had moved out of the country by that time, and so the history is well, a bit of a mystery.

Now a couple years later @ 175k, the only thing I've done is change the oil, filter, and air filter as required. I recently had the check engine light come on but the truck is still running smoothly. I will be taking my truck in to the dealer tomorrow to have my bumper replaced (I got rear ended), so I'm going to have them scan for codes. I'm hoping its something simple like a sensor, but really what I'm wondering is what maintenance I should look in to having the dealer do for me while its there. I was thinking about having the fuel filter done. Any fluids I should have done at the dealer?

I'm planning on doing a tune up myself but all I have in terms of tools is a ratchet and some additional hand tools so I'm somewhat limited in what I can do.

At the dealer or yourself to save money, I would drain and fill the differentials, transfer case, transmission, lube driveshafts and replace spark plugs, wires, coils ( unless they are aftermarket).

If the dealership will scan the code for free, I would let them do that and then stop there. They will overcharge you for anything else that needs to be done. Your pep boys should be able to scan the code as well.

In terms of general maintenance, I would do all the stuff AZTOY recommended, but do it yourself and save some money. It is neither difficult nor time consuming.

Other bigger maintenance items (if you're not sure when they were last performed): timing belt, water pump, thermostat, pulleys, etc. (AKA full timing belt kit), and front lower ball joints.

With the check engine light coming on, what code were thrown? I had mine come on a few months ago then disappear with more driving, no apparent engine malfunction. Code wasn't insightful but from this forum it lead me to believe it was the MAF sensor. Cleaned the MAF and the TB and haven't thrown a code since.

You should buy an inexpensive code scanner. I have seen them as low as $20 for a basic one.

Though they won't give you a record, maybe you can quiz him on the critical services such as timing belt. Maybe he will give you a yes it was done or no it wasn't. Thee Toyota dealer will have record of services done at the dealer and they were more than happy to send me a copy.

Will Pep Boys even do a timing belt? Sounds a little out of their league. Everything else listed above just go ahead and do, except I see no reason to swap good coils. Most coils will outlive the truck they are in and they are not cheap. The truck will run with three coils, you won't get stranded if one fails. I have 160k and I'm not changing mine.

Also have the pads, rotors, drums and shoes looked at and I'd also flush brake and PS fluid, but NOT at dealer.

I do know the water pump was been changed out, just don't recall at what mileage. I think it was around 125k. It showed up on the carfax. Also, under the hood it states that the timing belt was done @ 125K.

I forgot to mention that I had the brakes done @155k when I got the truck but its started to shake again. I wish I would have done the tundra upgrade at the time.

I'll update soon with the codes if the dealer helps me out with those. I'm heading there shortly.
