i just bought a house and am thinking about trading in my 4runner for something cheaper to lower my car payment. there is really nothing else i really want other than possibly an older 4r or a jeep cherokee. i need to be inspired and find a damn good reason to keep it and to cowboy the f- up and accept my car payment.....

if money is tight and you really can't justify having your rig, sell it. Keep these tidbits in mind: The 4Runner is arguably one of the most safe, versatile, reliable true SUVs out there. I saw somewhere that says people who drive 4Runners are less likely to die in a crash than compared to other suvs (something like that). Of course, there are demo-graphical facts and stuff mixed into that, but nevertheless it was said. Let's not forget that reliability is top notch. The words Jeep and reliability are oxymorons.
Get an older runner if need be, but stay away from Jeeps (I've had 4, trust me). Don't know what your experience is on Jeeps, but you WILL run into many repair bills. When I had my Toyota trucks (Surf, HiLux, 4Runner), I don't remember having repair bills, only maintenance bills.

I guess re run your numbers, ask yourself will you truly be happy with something else and only end up replacing it sooner than later just to save a few benjamins? Good luck

We have no idea what your balance is and what your vehicle needs are so the following is with a grain of salt.
Lowering your payment may sound good but by the time your pay retail on your next used car and get screwed on your trade in value the payment will not be much lower unless you go to a real piece of crap. Add in that future repair bills you do not have at this time and I don't see how you could lower your "payment" unless you dropped payments all together and drove whatever you could pay for cash. Of course you would still have the repairs..
There, now go love your 4Runner and start to work on how you can love peanut butter and jelly sandwiches too for awhile till you pay the thing off.

give it time... its tough adjusting to that first house payment, especially after dropping that big 20% down payment... but you will get used to it in short time. Plus, there are very few scenarios where you would ultimately save money, when depreciation is factored in, to trading into another vehicle.
Just know you have a (gen?) reliable ride that will give you little in the way of problems and repairs and is relatively inexpensive to own.
Browse the maintenance sections, see what you can do on your own to save $.

i too have been thinking about unloading my T4R and getting something a little cheaper. I decided against it for the very reason stated above. So, I just refi'd from 8% down to 3.99%. My payments are cheaper, i pay it off sooner and I have about 8k in equity according to NADA...happy times:banana:

Breakfast - 2 boiled eggs, crackers, and free coffee, muffins, or donuts (from stealership or some store) HAHA.
Lunch - Went to some China Buffet or similar (all you can eat) for $4.99-$5.99
Dinner - Ramen (chicken) noodles mixed with cabbage and glass of water.
So there, less than $10 a day. I get tired of eating the same stuff everyday so there are days that i had to go get some dollar menu's from McDonald's, Taco Bell, and Jack in the Box. Or find some hottie to take me out.

Good work, and actually kinda healthy. I suck at budgeting for food or enjoying the effort of cooking it or cleaning up after it. I get the missus to cook spectacularly on a budget, but no restaurants for us. Thank god for these Runners, though, because we can go anywhere any time for a picnic, and we can do it in any weather since we can all fit in the back no problem.
Without knowing your tax and job situation, there may be some tax implications in home ownership which could raise your take-home earnings--interest and property tax deductions can affect withholding, which then can increase take-home, if you itemize..
The best way to make you love your T4R is to get rid of it. Then you will always remember just how great it was (mine was a 1980 Toyota Celica GT--remember those?)

I downgraded a couple years ago big time from a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited to a Saturn SL with roll up windows and a 5speed. Man do I miss my Jeep. But, that's what brought me here, I'm looking for a 4Runner. If you HAVE to do it then do what it takes, but coming from someone who has had 13 cars, you're almost certain to regret it!
