Man vs. Wild

If you like Man Vs. Wild, read his book "The Kid Who Climbed Everest"...I always loved the show but the book gave me even more respect for the guy...The new season is a much different take on what he used to do but still great IMO.

Oh and I think the comparison between the two shows is difficult because the premise of suvivorman was to show you how to survive in one spot basically for 7 days...Les never really goes anywhere...

On the other hand, Bear strikes out and tackles the elements, he he's much more physical, and i don't care where he is, the guy can climb like no other.

He has to be, he was in the british special forces, and has already climbed everest.

Respect to both of those guys, they both have great shows.

Something i found out while watching a re-run and then going on the internet. Man vs. Wild episodes where Bear say he cannot be helped by his film crew have been edited out and replaced with a sort of confession. Examples include him admitting crew members placed dead animals out where he "found" them and ate them for survival. He says he didn't climb every obstacle without equipment, and a lot of the fish he catches in episodes comes from the crew. I thought all that was interesting, im not trying to put down Bear (no doubt in my mind he could do all these things on his own if he wanted to) i just feel a bit cheated when he used to say the crew could only help him in life or death situations. Early watchers of the show will remember him saying this.

Yup, that sealed the deal for me to. I think MvsW is a joke compared to Survivorman. I saw an episode where Baer couldn't catch a fish himself, but luckily a crewmember caught one so Baer could eat it. What a joke!!! I saw that footage of the lava crossing and heard about him staying in hotels during the shoot. Man, it must be tough staying at the Hilton!!! "Mr. Grills, yes this is your wake up call..."

At least Les Stroud is out there on his own. He shoots all his footage so sometimes he has to double back just so he can get his equipment after taking the shot. Everything he does is on his own. Of course he has a SAT phone for emergencies. Also when he was afloat at sea, he had a safety boat following him and he was pulled off the survival raft because of a storm. Storm passed, and they sent him right back on the boat. Les Stroud also is not a great hunter and some shows he's surviving on beatles and nothing more. If he can't catch it or find it, then he's not eating which to me is much more realistic.

Yeah but Les Stroud also scouts out the area with an entire crew, and wilderness experts before he stays his week, and often has guides camping a few miles away in case he needs help, so is that any better????

Yes. This thread is for opinions and you have mine :)

Well I see no difference in having a crew with you, or having a crew scout out the area FOR you, then have them camp a mile away in case you get scared at night......

Like I said, Baer's crew is actively helping him. They catch food for him, who knows what else they do for him. At least Les is out there doing stuff on his own. He may have a safety crew a few miles away, but they are not right next to him. There was an episode where a Jaguar was stalking him, no help fromt he crew.... Plus I haven't heard of Les staying at a hotel during the shoot... :bash:

" During the taping of Episode 9 Lost at Sea Survivorman Les Stroud was flown back to the Radisson every night near Belize City to relax, sleep, and sip drinks by the pool. You know that authentic looking sunburn Les shows off while on his raft? Fake! He got that from laying out by the pool at the Radisson Hotel in Belize. Did he purposely get sunburnned at the Radisson to make it look like he was lost at sea for days? PROBABLY!! Les Stroud most likely fell alseep near the pool :)
You may also recall during this episode of survivorman Les Stroud points out a severe thunderstorm approaching and that his safety crew may have to rescue him from his life raft so he doesn

Hey, both guys have great survival skills and they both have different personalities. At the end of the day they are both there to entertain. Who would want to watch someone sleep and hike all day? They have to fill up the time somehow, and sometimes i guess the crew has to help out or they have to study the area for interesting content to fill the show with.

Only ONE way to settle this debate...........

:bash: FIGHT TO THE DEATH :bash:

Two men get dropped on a deserted island, one man finds his way off the island. Simple solution really. I don't know why we haven't set this up on PPV already...... :biggrin2:

Yeah that would be the shortest fight ever. Being in Special Forces, Bear Grylls would have Les Stroud laid out in the first 2 minutes, then use his body as part of his raft. :lmao:

yeah I'd have to agree on that :D

Id have to say Les actually has better realistic survival skills. If you were honest to god out there in cold temps and in an unknown location, the last thing you would want to do is run down a cliff side (broken ankle anyone?) or hop in the freezing water and float for miles (hypothermia). Yet it seems Bear does one of these things in every episode.

Plus it seems his favorite way to start the scenario is by skydiving... how many people are going to be stuck in the wilderness after jumping from a plane? Les often uses realistic scenarios such as a lost backpacker, or a broken down snowmobile. Thats why I have much more respect for him over Bear.

The guy flew over Mt. Everest in a para glider.... huh what????

who else has done that??? Well I hope that was not fake. :)

He might or might not be a fake. either way, he has some huge, I mean some HUGE danglers!!!!

Well I enjoy watching both shows, I just to check to see if they are full of crap or not in their methods...

He didn't actually fly over Mt. Everest. His claim is that he flew at a height ABOVE that of mt everest, somewhere in the Himalayas.
Also how high he flew is really controversial as he didn't follow any of the protocol required in order for his world record to be ratified and accepted as a record. God, that documentary on it was boring though. Discovery did great advertising it. It ended up being like 1 hour of how him and his friend make a petrol powered glider and 5 mins of flight before all communication etc. is lost before he returns. :bash:

He's got a lot of controversy surrounding him these days.
