I have a '98 4runner, 3.4L V6, Manual transmission, 150K. About a month ago i noticed when engaging 1st gear I could actually push the gear stick through the 1st gear position, so it almost touched the dash. No problem, it was still in gear and it only lasted a few days before going back to normal.
However, after using 4H for a couple days after the recent snow, I again noticed the problem with 1st gear, when I put the car back into 2H. I went to move the car yesterday and had major problem finding reverse. Eventually got it, reversed out of driveway and couldn't get a single gear at all. Pushed back onto driveway.
I played again with it this morning, the gear stick is completely limp, no gears to be found anywhere. Its almost as if the box has twisted or moved position?
Any ideas? It feels like the wire has gone, but I'm worried its more severe. Just wondered if its anything simple, before I get a tow to the shop tomorrow...
