So i just got a 01' a few months ago and i want to start making it more off-road worthy but its a 2wd.So i figured if i was going to start any where it would be a manual locking diff. But i have no idea what brands to consider. So any help or links would be awesome.

Shame you got a 2wd if you want to take it offroad, but before you throw money at a locker (and another vote for the ARB Airlocker), i highly recomend you get some decent offroad tires first. Tires are by far and away the best offroad mod you can ever do.

Well yea tires and a lift are a must since a stock 01' sits at -1. But a lunchbox locker? is that just an auto locking diff?

x2 no point in having anything locked if your tires can't keep that torque on the ground, but seriously are you trying to make a trail rig or just have something slightly more capable than your 2wd setup? the lockers will help a lot but your still only going to be locked left to right in the back but not locked front to rear for a true 4x4 setup(meaning you'll never have power going to the front tires). So you'll still come up short, this is why people are saying sell it and get 4x4,
so what are you going for here? explain more.....

Yes. Ones like Lock-Rite, AussieLocker, Detriot etc... You can get these for less than $300, but they do change the driving characteristics a little. For some thats worth the savings of $700 over an ARB.

again what's he trying to accomplish? the auto lockers can be noisy and cause some on road problems as well as excessive tires wear, and is not advised if your driving 90% of the time on the road, i've even heard people loose control on ice and such with the rear end locking up whenever, but that's heresy and don't really see that as being an issue, i like the cable lockers so you don't have to fool around with a air compressor and they are the most reliable as less components are involved and no air lines and such to get holes. but again how hard do you wheel? me i'm a big girl, nothing to extreme so an arb would be a good choice for me as i don't have to worry about tearing lines or any of the crazy stuff, i mean depending on what your trying to do just spool it lol,
what about trying to find a stock locker and chucking in there, don't quote me on this but i think all of the wiring should be there for a direct install, but that's somethign for you to look into as i don;t know much about the yota's
more of a jeep guy, just got my runner 2-3 months ago, so i'll just yeild the conversation to the vets at this point.

break down of what lockers by type then by brand and what to expect with each

just spool it lol

Haha....then kiss your rear tires goodbye!:D

A lunchbox locker would be perfectly fine. I too am mostly a jeep guy and I drive my jeep on the street all the time with full Detroits in both front and rear and I dont really have any issues. During icy weather or on slick roads, I'll hear the rear, but I've gotten used to the feel.

The cable actuated locker that you refer to is OX, correct? Those are pretty stout, but I believe they have gone out of business, which might not be a good thing if you break any part of their system.

ox is gone? that's sad.....i liked thier stuff, my jeep was a niner with the crappy d44a in the rear and the only locker you could buy for the back end was the aussie, which they only made like 200 at a time then there was a waiting list, and a scramble for them i saw where a guy bought one for $600 from aussie and then turned around and sold it for 1K a few weeks later....yeah that wasn't cool,
so needless to say this is my first e-locker i've ever had but preferred the ox lockers in my previous xj's.

i've also just always ran with a cheap lsd in the front and a good locker in the rear as like i said i wheel but nothing too intense. i prefer better body Armour and clearance over atlas' and fully locked, i'd really like to know what this guy is trying to do,

i bet he's a soccer mom looking for a mild lift....(a jab at my stupidity from your thread where i thought you where a chick lol):vader: ...i still laugh at myself when i think about that ;-)

Maybe I was wrong:

I could have sworn that they went out of business. Maybe someone just bought them...

However, a quick look through their product line doesn't show any lockers for a Toyota vehicle...

That was pretty funny...but that wasnt me....I was just helping that guy out....:surfer:
