What is this broken plastic piece under valve cover?

Hey guys I've been going through the diagrams and trying to figure out exactly what this is? Under driver side valve cover. As shown the plastic piece is broke and the other half I believe just melted into grime. Was having misfires on that side, it was leaking through gasket around where this was. Any help would be so awesome!
