Manual rev just like a auto hehehe..oh!

Alrighty, first of all to apologize if this is already answer somewhere else... but after spending 5 min figuring HOW to log on and another 15 just trying to remember the logon, I got lazy.

I have a 91 3.0 with a manaul tranny. On somedays, it rev just like a automatic with a torque converter problem. If I do any kind of hard acceleration, the rpm will rise sharply but the car will slowly crawl up in speed with the engine rpm creeping back down until the two are in mesh again. It doesn't do this all the time. Just on random days with nothing to say when or where. The gears do not slip, nor does any of the gear "pop" out of the gear they are in. The tranny drives fine, except for that one little problem.

I had always thought that the gears in a manual was hard linked to the engine via the clutch? If this is so, then how in the hell does my truck do 25mph at 3500rpm in 4th gear?

Anywho... any replies or guess be appreciated.

im no expert, but my guess would be that your clutch is starting to go. a friend of mine always rode the cluch on his 98 dakota, and i tried driving it and it sounds like you have the same problem. anyway, try getting it checked out, a clutch replacement can get pretty pricey.

You will be needing a new clutch VERY VERY SOON!!!! :
I would look for a Clutch, pressure plate, & throw out bearing.
This will help you 4runner drive like new.

Exactly what 95runner said. Get a clutch kit and have it replaced asap. My friends 96' Nissan 240Sx or something like that had the clutch go completely it wasn't a pretty sight. The clutch is basically a pack of disks that have friction material on them when you push the clutch in you separate those disks allowing a separation between the motor and they tranny, when you let out on the clutch your pushing those friction plates together making them start to spin. As you can imagine there is a lot of heat generated in this process and that's what kills your clutch.

Thanks for all the reply guys... DAMN! And I had just finish swaping out a camry engine too... I really was hoping for a break from all the crap of working on my cars. Oh well.
