Manual Transmission

What is happening to the manual transmission? T4R will almost certainly be my next vehicle, but I'm having a hard time getting my head around automatics. I love the control of a manual, I love being able to get my car running even if the battery is dead, I love being completely involved in the driving process, and I love that a manual precludes most people from driving MY car.

C'mon Toyota, the 4R is a serious truck, not some nancy commuter's mommy-mobile. Why no manual?

Get V-6 4WD and you get to shift from 2wd into 4wd or 4wd low manualy But seriously, that automatic is nice plus you can shift it between 3rd and 4rt gears while you driving to get engine breaking. Any way there are so many combinations of things you can do with 4spd or 5spd trans that I can't even list them all in 1 post... Besides, how are you going to drive, talk on the phone, eat chicken and watch dvd movie while you busy shifting gears:

I too, would rather have gotten a stick, but the simple fact is that there are too few of us who want them. It's a simple bean counter thing.

The reason for the Automatics is the Traction control and the ABS dosen't
really work very well with the manual transmission.

The ability to select the gears on the automatic is a substitute for the manual.

Honestly, when the 4rth gen came out I too was dissapointed with no manual trans option.

But after a couple years with the truck, it's safe to say that modern auto trans's, especially with the gated shifter, are so good that now I would probably take one over a stick, even if it was offered. In sports cars, I'll still take a standard, but for everyday driving, towing stuff, and long highway trips, the auto is pretty damn good.
