Manual vs Automatic POLL

Which would you rather have: Manual or Auto transmission?

it's a 6. By lots of wear on the underside I mean - It needs to be scraped/wire brushed and a coat of Rustoleum or undercoating applied.

So you want to get this new one just for the manual? Not worth it in my opinion, but I like autos more than manuals.
 
I looked hard to find a manual that was loaded with leather power windows, locks, roof, Factory E-locker!...IT may just be a nich market but, I'm one that avoided auto.
In mixed driving I'm getting 23 mpg. City only on a tank closer to 20. I have gotten closer to 25 on a long road trip. Thats darn good compared to what new suvs are getting.

Yes it is. The only difference is that most of todays SUV's could haul a lot more stuff than our 4runners.

I'm not complaining though, I like my 4runner.

Good point about the towing/hp difference of newer SUVs
That is true but, I have taken a lot of other suvs off the line in my 5 sp. :D

i got my 4r because it was smaller than new ones. the third gen 4r and blazer/explorer have pretty much diminished. instead, they only offer compact or extremely large suvs. the small ones are too small and the big ones suck on gas and trying to park in the city. the third gens are the size of a car with the hauling capacity of an suv. never had an issue hauling drywall, plywood, lumber, carpet, anything.

Most of that is true. By hauling capacity I mean like a camper of trailer. There is no way I would tow our pop up camper with my 4runner. Our Suburban can handle it though.

I think the Tahoe is kinda of a mid size SUV.
 
I prefer the automatic because I eat on the run and it's hard to eat when you're stuck in traffic with a manual. Both 4runners I've owned have automatics. One drawback is the cost of having to change out a new transmission. I know with a clutch it's much cheaper even if you have to go through 2-3 clutches it would be cheaper than a new auto tranny.
 
AUTO

I've driven both. the manual more power out of the hole. costs less to repair and that's great but...I got stuck in a traffic jam. three hours of crawling in my uncles 98 4 runner F that S. now my auto LOVE IT all my cars have been manual from 5.O mustang,acura integra,and toyota truck for those vehicles manual's great but for a 4 runner auto all the way baby. put her in drive and cruz.
 
To me it depends on the car. There is nothing wrong with either, but for an SUV, I prefer an automatic. For a sportier car, such as my Mustang, I prefer manual. It's much more fun!

Yeah i agree, i ski and after a 10 hour day of skiing you'll want an automatic.
 
i have a 5 speed manuel in my 4runer. i love it.

the only downfall is the traffic but it will idle in 1st and that works for me, and i snowboard and have messed my clutch leg up and its horrible driving home


o well id buy another one
 
i prefer manual, traffic is no big deal, i had a 92 pickup and drove it in Washington DC traffic for 12 yrs. now im in chesapeake and have an 02 4r. tha i wish was manual. either way though i love my 4r!!:p
 
A lot of people say you get more out of the engine with a manual. I say that only applies if you have a gutless motor to begin with. If you have a V8 you don't need manual. BUT, nothing is more fun than a torquey V8 with a stick! Nothing like barking the tires in all gears!
 
Manual all the way here

I grew up driving both automatics and manual transmissions, and manual is my transmission of choice. Granted the 5 spd on a 3.4L V-6 does not compare to the 6 spd on the Audi sitting next to it in the garage with respect to speed...but it is entirely more entertaining and responsive when driving compared to the automatic counterpart (in my opinion).

Great poll, interesting how people have responded.

Ehh... ah shit I'm old now- I'm tired of shifting in my everyday driving.

Now if it was a hot-rod that 's a different story.
