Manual vs Automatic POLL

In 1983, I bought a new Toyota 4x4 pickup with a manual transmission.
In 1990, I bought a new Toyota 4x4 pickup with a manual transmission and still have it.
Last year, I had a 1998 4runner fall into my lap with a manual transmission...I had to buy it!
There is nothing like grabbing a gear with a manual trans...I would feel naked with out it.

Auto, most definitely with the 3.4. If I had a 4-banger I'd consider a manual just to wring out every last drop of power.
One thing to remember is that with the auto you can shift it just like a manual 1-2-d and then the OD button just by moving the lever or pressing your OD button. Also, if you get the valve body worked on (for about the price of a new clutch) it it'll hit the gears just as hard and fast as a stick. And as long as you don't run it hot, the A340 tranny will go forever.
One advantage to the stick that I liked on my old toyota truck was that if you ever had starter issues you could just park on a hill and pop the clutch on that sob. I went without a starter for close to a month one time doing that every start. It would be handy to be able to do that if your starter ever went out in a remote place.

Well, all automatics allow you to manually shift. Most instructions also tell you to start the car in 2 for slippery conditions to reduce the torque spin you get so you don't slip. However, with a automatic, you still don't get as much engine braking as in a manual which is one of the annoying things in an auto, plus, I need something for my left foot to do...haha. I'm still looking for a manual 3rd gen but it's totally dried up here in the westcoast of Canada.

How can so many people say 4runners are better auto!
the only reason i bought mine was cause it was standard. i think you people should just learn better clutch control before you say anything.
What really drives me nuts about autos is when you're going up a hill and the can't decide what gear to stay in. Maddening!!!
i love the clutch, a love the stick, i love the engine braking, i love roll starting, i love not letting people drive my truck cause they suck at standard, i love being able to pick my own gear cause no matter what anyone says, i know what gear i should be in better than any transmission!

yes it saves the brakes more but let's call it "negative energy" from braking goes into additional wear on the engine when using the compression stop or slow down driving technique as well as extra wear on the clutch.
imo, both are negligible and are things people who are a fan of one or the other tout as indisputable proof of why you should have one or the other,
i don't know about you guys but the brakes in my auto tranny seem to last for more then long enough between swaps.

If you do it right, there is almost no wear on the clutch.
Your just a lazy ass, maybe you should get a manual with synchro's!

haha can't argue with that, i am lazy and love my auto...
my point is how many people actually drive their stick correctly?
running the clutch correctly and shifting at the right point every-time?
lots would love to say they do, but the truth is alot of people don't "REALLY" know how to drive stick...if you can the good for you and you truly do get all of the benefits of being a stick owner....just alot of people aren't that guy and think they are....
ultimately i think it's personal preference and the hype over pro's and con's is exaggerated....
