Mass air flow sensor

I have a 1999 4Runner Limited. I took it to the stealership for a check engine light and they said it was the MAF sensor. I sprayed it down with MAF cleaner and the light came back in around 15 min. I did not know Oriely's offered a replacement for $150'ish before the core.

I wanted to know if it was worth taking the chance on wasting money on a refurbished one ( since if it doesnt work Its mine to keep no refund :crybaby: ).

Do any of you have expierence with the Orielys brand MAF?

I trust you took it out of your vehicle, sprayed it down good, let it dry, etc?

If that didn't help, then you might be looking at buying a new MAF... Never heard of the O'Reilly's are any good. Id probably bite the bullet and search for a Toyota part online, or someone who is parting out a Tacoma or 4Runner.
 
OEM for sensors, use nothing else.

Just checking, but did you spray the air intake sensor or actually spray down the tube where the MAF sensor wires are (two of them I think)?

I sprayed down the metal portion under the bulb generously by removing the air box, and unscrewing the 2 screws that secure the MAF and taking it out of the air intake assembly, and allowed it to dry for atleast 25 min. I did not spray the entire tube assembly.
 
By the way, I have seen people with the MAF code and cleaned it, but it didn't fix the code until they replaced it with a new one. I don't think its entirely uncommon.

I wonderd about that.. I was thinking that was why my gas milage was terrible with a rough idle and rough start occasionally? I didnt want to do damage to the engine.
 
My mechanic pulled the P0171 code on my 4Runner and told me it was most likely a dirty MAF sensor. This weekend I cleaned my MAF sensor and my check engine light hasn't come back. If it doesn't come back on in another day, I'll know I'm in the clear.

1) You really need to spray down the entire thing. If you look down the hole in the sensor you'll see two very, very thin wires. These need to be sprayed down with the cleaner. Do not touch them at all, just let the cleaner do its work.

2) Reset the check engine light by pulling out the 20 amp fuse out of the fuse box and put it back in after 30 mins.

MAF Cleaning

As some of the others pointed out, you need to make sure you are cleaning the MAF correctly. As I recall, when you look in, the first thing you see is a teardrop shape brown bulb on the bottom of a wire....that is the air temp sensor - not the critical MAF sensor. I messed around with my MAF - cleaning and having the CEL reoccur before I figured out that I wasn't cleaning it right. No issues for over a year since I followed TheDirk's directions. Good Luck
 
yes, you have to clean the whole thing, i pulled that code recently, cleaned the maf and throttle body and iac valve, reset the cel, but i think it will come back on as it still runs a little rough, that code also says it may be the o2 sensors, which next time it comes up i will replace both thru amazon for the price of one, hopefully the code will go away then.
 
ntopliffe has it right. a GENTLE swabbing with a cuetip with maf cleaner is probably your best solution before you replace anything.

I had this code, cleaned the MAF, and the code magically disappeared.
 
mass flow sensor issue

I have a 99 4 runner, had the engine light come on. Even after replacing the O2, air filter, cleaning the mass sensor, checking the vaccum lines..the light would flash on after 75 miles or so....my eventual solution: a new mass flow sensor..I hated to buy it(after market) however, was at wits end...
i cleaned the maf carefully with electronic cleaner, let dry, ect..however, i guess sometimes they need replacing. Engine starts better and mileage has shown some improvement.
 
maf diagram

I have a 2004 4 runner 4.7. While changing the serpentine belt the wires on the mass air flow censor pulled out of the connector. I need a diagram to put them back in. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I use automotive electronic contact cleaner and find it cleans better than maf cleaner, hell it might be the same thing at half the price.
EDIT: I tried the link posted above and it gives me nada?
