MAF cleaning
Hey there, I saw this was old but incase you didn't get an answer, you can remove the MAF from the side of the "tube" with a small screw driver, go slow don't strip the screws. Then gently remove the sensor, you can clean it with a Q-tip and some contact cleaner and then re-install. good luck, CSM-H

Okay, I acknowledge the fact that I'm a novice Saturday morning mechanic, but I need help here.
I have the electronics cleaner and I'm ready to get my MAF sensor removed/cleaned, but my 1998 is a totally different set-up than those shown on the previous threads.
What do I need to do to detach/clean my MAF? I know it's a PITA, but pictures would be much appreciated.
I did some research on this forum, and this topic was previously brought up about a year ago, but the answers really aren't helping me. Thanks in advance.

This is a testament to using search before asking questions and the value of appropriate pictures. The videos on youtube show the MAF facing up for easy access while mine is on the side and well obscured from any normal screwdriver. The picture in the link showing a screw bit in vise grip solved my (first?) issue. (I wonder if there's a wrench sized to do that with less potential for slippage.)
Does anyone know why it's mounted on the side? Can the housing be rotated or is it mounted securely to the air filter?
While I'm posting, onlilne stuff talked about P0171 and P0174 for 2 banks and 2 O2 sensors. Does the V6 4Runner have 2 banks? I ask because mine is only coding P0171 and I'm worried it may not be the MAF with only 1 side coding.
