Mass Airflow Sensor?

1994 3.0 SR5 I just replaced the mass airflow sensor and it went from sputtering and not starting to starting up and idling for a few seconds then dying. It sounds a lot better than before so im pretty sure that was the major cause of my problem but now its started whistling while its running then dying. I figure the whistle could be cause by me not connecting an air hose or something correctly and thats why it can't find ilde stabley. Does anyone know what could be wrong or help me trouble shoot? Im pretty lost right now but after paying 160 for a mass airflow sensor Im determined to get this thing going.

It's not an MAF, it's an AFM. The whistle is likely a hole in the intake tube or one of the boots. If you get too much unmetered air the AFM won't register and the truck will shut itself off.

Okay I tightened up all the hosings clamps and made sure everything was sealed. Still getting the same problem and if I give it gas while it's idling it cuts off so im guessing the extra air is the problem like you said. Any ideas on where else it could be coming from?

I hope you paid that price for a new one right? Test it to make sure. Other than that I can only think of unmetered air getting in some how. Hoses on straight? No cracks in the hoses? Vacuum lines all good?

Any codes?

Check the boots on the intake really closely. They like to split in the accordion sections, down where you can't see it.

Try this - take off the intake boot and hold open the flapper vane in the AFM while you start the truck. If it doesn't stay running when you do that, your trouble isn't the AFM or air tube.

Checked the intake boot and everything is tight and closed. I changed the fuel filter and still the same problem. I think it may be the spark plugs so im changing them later today.

Plugs got it idling but no power over 1500 rpm. Seafoamed the vacuum line off the break booster and in the gas tank made a little difference but still idles rough.

Ok so Air filter clean?(basic I know but you would be surprised how many people overlook it)

Have you checked for codes? I know sometimes there will be one but the light wont turn on...might lead somewhere

Test the distributor to see if it is in spec. If the new plugs helped it could be ignition related. Check timing?

Seafoam has alcohol in it so if it runs better when you put it in it could be a fuel issue. Pressure test the fuel system at the rails. Pressure should be between 38-44psi.
