mastercraft tires....hydroplaning

I recently bought a 2006 V8 sport 4wd runner, about 2k miles ago. The truck came with brand new tires.
Mastercraft Course HTR tires to be exact. I have done some looking around on this forum and have seen others use mastercraft tires but never this brand specificly. The truck is fine on dry pavement but is VERY squirly in the rain. More so then even my wifes FWD saab which is in desperate need of tires.
My 1999 Runner had hankook tires and I could plow through huge puddles with that without any issue. Not the 06...Not with these tires.

I looked on tirerack.com for replacements and was shocked at how many tires in this size got rating bellow 5 for hydroplaning. My tires on not sold through tirerack but I did find them on an offroading website that rates them 1 out of 5 stars for driving on wet pavement.

I hate to buy new tires being that I have new tires!!!!

2 questions. First anyone else use these tires. Did you have the same experience?

Second I am looking for a tire thats great in all crappy weather/especially hydroplaning and not a ton of road noise. I dont go offroading often by any means. But do do some on occasion.

Any recomendations?

For the money, I found the Firestone Destination AT's to be a great tire. I've had Michelin LTX's and Bridgestone REVO's and the Destination rates right up there and are a lot cheaper.

If those tires you have suck in rain, I'd imagine they're not good in snow either. Dump 'em. I've been contemplating the same with my stock Dumbflops.

Continue using tirerack. I like their customer service and the reviews section is the best in the industry.

I'm not sure why you didn't use them in the first place.

As I mentioned the truck came with the tires on it.

I normally buy from the rack just wanted some opinions.

Consider having the tires siped, Discount Tire does a pretty good job and will honor tire wear warranties after siping even if you didn't buy them there. If you can watch them, make sure they have plenty of coolant on the siping blade. It doesn't take much coolant, but dry siping is a harder on the rubber and blade. I had a set of Cooper Discoverer S/T siped, they were great in bad weather, a guy I know hated his for bad weather.

In water deeper than tread depth, you will hydroplane at approximately the square-root of your tire pressure times ten. 36 psi -> 60 mph. This is a little complicated, but basically the ability of water to lift a tire depends on the weight on the tire and square inches of tire contact, psi, which roughly compares to the psi inside the tire. Tread pattern can help expel water from the contact patch, but not very much, and not at all once you are in water deeper than tread depth.

I bought my 05 4runner earlier this year. The tires on it were Mastercraft (all season). I didn't experience them in snow or very wet conditions, but I did decide to buy new tires.

I went with General Grabbers (all season) and I can say that are a huge improvement over the mastercrafts. The ride is greatly improved as is the traction. These tires got high reviews on Tirerack and were also recommended to me by the Tirerack employee. They also were top rated by Consumer Reports. But all say again that they aren't off road tires - they're all-seasons. I feel like these tires can handle most situations extremely well.
