Push It To The Limit - Paul Engemann - YouTube

So, I wasn't trying to make this happen but I got her up to 307 miles as I rolled up to the pump. 307/15.546=19.74 mpg. 18.5-15.546= 2.9 gallons left in the tank. Definitely probably as low as I'm comfortable taking the tank...haha!

So, what's your best tank? Who's really taken it to the limit?

I've always assumed I could get right about 300 miles based on getting 19-20 MPG at highway speeds. Maybe a little more if the whole tank could be driven at 55MPH in 5th gear. I would never run the tank all the way down while traveling, so it'll remain theoretical for me.

I just can’t bring myself to go much below 1/4 tank. A 12 gal fillup……but I’ll go 230-280 to the 1/4 line depending on what I’m doing.

My 5th gen can go 350mi as long as i am above 16-17mpg. Granted that's leaving a gallon of reserve at best.

I'm lucky to get 200 to 240 miles before my gas light comes on. E Rated Mud Tires, Full Skids, Sliders, and 4.30 gears are my only mods. The truck runs fine as far as I can tell. I used to get about 17-19 mpg before I did all the armor, gearing, and tires.

Last road trip I got 14.5 mpg running average of 70 mph for 2 hours.

The highest I ever got was 21 mpg on all highway driving tank. I dont have trip meter of it though. I pushed them to over 300. Mostly, I don't get this high at all as my area is all up and down. 14-16 or so is my averages....:-(

Its best to keep fuel on these pumps. So 1/4 or especially when the idiot light comes on get fuel because this is how the fuel pump is cold down. Running tanks super low all the time would definitely shorten the life of your fuel pump so I would just keep that in mind. As those are a little project to change. :-)

Did you change your tire size? If so the trip counters will be off a bit though I'm not sure how much.

Up at high altitudes I've gotten 24-26 mpg but of course this came at the cost of the truck having practically no power...

Yeah I generally fill up when the light comes or. Specifically, once it gets down to about a fourth I'll usually start heading that way but especially if the light comes on. Oddly enough to light comes on inconsistently so I try not to rely on it solely.

With the Tire and Gear change at the same time, GPS calculated speed is the same as it was prior. 70 on the speedo is 72 on the GPS. Thats what I was getting with the stock tires and gears.

22 mpg with the cruise set on 70mph back from Moab is my best tank. Wife drove the 4runner while I drove the Cummins pulling the rv.

I never suck the tank dry intentionally. That plays absolute hell on injectors. Doesn’t matter if it’s gasoline or diesel, the fuel is used to cool and lubricate injectors and pumps. Even some Ecm’s get fuel pumped through them to help cool them.

My odometer and Speedo read dead on gps verified.

I have hit 400 miles at least once, and probably 2 or 3 times.

My max mpg was 23.5 once, going from GA to FL (slightly downhill the entire way), and keeping the cruise set at 60.

I normally get 17-19 around town and 17-19 on the hwy, but there is often a kayak or canoe on my roof, and I normally cruise 65-70 on interstates.

Above 70 mph, fuel economy gets dismal, real fast. Tons of aerodynamic drag on these machines.

High altitude and/or a 4 cylinder? I guess I should have specified that I had a V6 in the main post. Haha

I presume you have a 4 banger?

V6 highlander 40psi tires, cruise set at 70 on the interstate.

Air in the tires and less than 70mph is the key.

Wow, at close to sea level? And man I've never pushed the tires to 40... One time for a trip I filled them up to 38 and holy shit it was rough... Haha

Moab utah to the magic valley area in souther Idaho. 3-5k elevation most of the trip. One mountain pass to go over from price to Spanish fork utah.

Mine does 38-40psi cold well for the road trips. Load C tire and 6112/5160 billies make it really plush in my opinion. Load C tire is the biggest contributor to comfort there. The E tires I had were like riding on wooden wheel compared to the C’s. My opinion is skewed though, I’m that guy that grew up in old cab over semis with Hendrickson walking beams and leaf sling pickups with front shackles…. Everything rides nice to me after being in those.

It does really well when you set the cruise and forget it. If your in and out of the throttle, driving fast or around town then it goes down significantly.

A good portion of the time my wife is following me as i tow our 34 ft glamper rig. She’s not usually following that close, but I suppose there could be some times where she is catching a bit of a draft behind me or other semi’s , and that could be helping improve fuel economy also.

It’s just a cheap rig to operate when you get down to it. Even off roading I average 15 mpg. Shoot, it seems like most other vehicles are down around that 10-12 range. I run the Pennzoil GTL full synthetic also. Not sure if that has much impact or not. Valves are in spec and it’s tuned up. I usually keep the air filters pretty fresh Since my local dealer give me the good guy price on Toyota parts air filters are only like 20 bucks.

Other than that, I don’t know if there’s anything much else special Except maybe the underbelly armor? It is really smooth and flat. I have everything covered except the pocket where the muffler is I wonder if that could be helping the fuel economy some?
