Maxtor USB 2.0 drive / Win ME drivers?

I am trying to install a Maxtor hardrive on my Win ME PC. I have the Adaptec USB 2.0 adapter installed and have a CD-RW device working on it. When I plug in the Maxtor hardrive though, it is not recognized. It seems that some driver files are missing. The Maxtor Knowledge Base suggests that I go to C:/Windows/Options/Install , open the Base2 folder and drag several USB*.SYS etc. files to /Sytem32/Drivers. Unfortunately I don't seem to have a Base2 folder in the ../Options/Install tree and I don't have a proper Win ME distribution disck since the OS came preinstalled by Dell. USBSTOR.SYS is one of the files I need that I can't find. Any suggestions ast to the best place to find these driver files?
