Maxtrax vs recovery strap, only purchasing one

For getting out of sand and mud. I would never go alone. I thought about the recovery strap, but it seems like for someone who would only use it for emergencies, I wouldn't be well versed, and it would become more dangerous than laying down some boards and staying clear of the board.

It depends on if you wheel by yourself or with others!
I say Maxtrax if you wheel alone the majority of the time, or the strap if you go out with some buddies. The strap is not gonna do much good if you are by yourself!
Best bet is to buy both for either scenario. What's $30 bucks for a recovery strap after you splurge on some expensive Maxtrax recovery boards?

If your using someone else's money, Maxtrax's.
If you are paying for it yourself, strap.
Seriously, it kinda depends, do you go off road alone (as in the only vehicle) or always with a buddy (in a separate 4x4)?
For self recovery, the MaxTrax's are infinitely more useful than a strap.
If you have a second vehicle free to pull, a strap is a time tested reliable way to move your stuck vehicle. And it could move a stuck vehicle quicker and in worse conditions than MaxTrax's.
So kinda depends on the variables.

I got ya! I have never used the Maxsa recovery boards, but I have used Treds with a good deal of success. It really all depends on your budget. I think MaxTrax boards are like Rigid Light bars... if you got the money then get the best, but if not I think the ones you are looking at seem pretty good, although I can't speak first hand. Hopefully you don't have to use them often! I would definitely get both the boards and the strap though, if that is at all an option! Haven't really been much help I guess, but I am sure others may chime in with cheaper board options that they have used with success if you decide to go that way!

While time consuming, it's possible to use a Hilift as a winch. With a decently modified Jeep I do not wheel alone. I would consider either the Maxtrax or a great strap with Hilift Jack.
Do be very careful with the Hilift Jack. It prefers good lubrication. Never let go of the handle. Do follow all safety procedures. The HiLift is incredibly handy and dangerous if not respected. If there are no suitable trees where you wheel the Maxtrax would probably get more use. Always use a tree saver strap.

I mostly wheel alone -
I carry several straps and a come-along.
I rarely need either except for pulling some one else out of sand, usually an amateur who wasn't listening to my instructions.

I don't know why you'd purchase only one. I wheel alone and with friends, and I carry all the recovery gear I have room for. Winch, HiLift, exhaust jack, a collection of snatch and tow straps. Traction/bridging boards are on the way, and I'm working out plans for a homemade pull pall.
Everything gets used, often, from stuck recoveries (me and others) to helping with field repairs (me and others). I haven't had a day trip turn into an unintended camping trip yet, and that's at least in part to the recovery gear I carry.

I have MaxTrax for self-sufficiency and to have another tool in the box. Straps have been infinitely more useful in the trips I've done so far though.
As has been repeatedly stated though they're for different scenarios.
