any help appreciated on this one. i can get them for around the same price.

uuumm neither one? lol , you get slightly better gas mileage with the 255's and even that's debatable........it's really a personal choice i went with 285's (duratrac) on my dd and am plenty happy, i know this is a tire size question and not a tire brand question, so just saying i'm happy with the 285's

and don't pay much attention to my douche bag reply, i know what your going through getting ready to drop alot of cash on some new rubber and not quite sure what you really want! i always freak out a lil bit when buying things like this, what if i should have gone with the pizza cutters instead, or what if i should have gone with a wider tire for better on road traction? haha, it sucks but it's cool too because your getting some new tires!:girl:

personally i'd stay with my 285's i feel like over all they offer more versatility
and on road traction.

im actually not spending a dime. the KM2s are out. i dont care about the ride. i got a 4runner to use as a truck. not as an LX470 grocery getter yuppie. so, i got dents, dings, holes, have smashed windows offroading from slamming into tree roots while in trenches, etc.... this is oriented into what will get me past my obstacle while wheeling w my buddies (one who has a 1st gen 4runner S.A. w 37's detroits f+r, and 4.7 xfer case, and no lift - he is quite unstoppable, and the other w a wrangler locked front and rear w 35km2s. so im lookni for max ground clearance. 285s just seem a little overkill width-wise

i just want to make sure the 255's are stable enough on the road.

oh ok that's a completely different question then whats better for a DD, the 285's would undoubtedly be better for daily driving, but the 255's should be good enough for dd'ing and not really all that much of a lose, you will get a bit more lift out of the 255 as well which will raise your center of gravity and make daily driving worse as well, that said, i don't think you'd regret getting the 255's with what you described here as your intentions, check with brain he ran the 255's for a while and is now back to a 285 i believe, might want to ask him why on that, but he seemed happy enough at the time with them...
here's his build thread maybe he mentions something about them in there.

I'd say either are good, but if you are on the stock rims the do 255's w/ spacers. brian2sun mentioned he liked having the spacers because it gave him more stability with the tall skinnies. I personally like a wider tire better, but it does rub more. Really you can't go wrong with either as izz said.

Brian2sun went to 35's not 285's(33's). I have been running the 285's and really wanted to go to the 255 and so do a lot of other people. There is only 1" difference in width and have less rolling resistance. You will be fine with the 255's and personally would be my choice, however I do not do a lot of mud. If you do a lot of mud then it is a closer toss up with possibly a little lean to the 285. All other conditions the 255 is the winner in my book.

285= more square contact patch when aired down wider but not as long(mud)
255= long rectangle, better for conforming to rocks and other objects. cuts throug the snow and to the road.

The actual surface area is close in size but in different shapes. Of course this is just my opinion.

I have 255/85r16 Bighorns. I am extremely happy with them on and off the road. They are more quiet than other MT tires. They perform very well in mud and other slick terrain. I havent noticed any negative side effects to the narrower tires at all.
They are stable enough for me to run without sway bars, and Im used to driving a ST class prepped Civic.

right?!! who wants to get into this argument again...i think there was a really good 5-6 page thread on this subject around a year ago, i just can't seem to find it and can't seem to remember what the general conclusion was...

i do think i found a single post of yours on the subject though....

not sure how to navigate to the actaul thread though to see if it was the one i was thinking of.....

I actually liked the 255s just fine as far as 33s go. I've ran 285s too and I like them and 255s equally. I don't think it makes much difference really. I only changed from 255s to step up to 35s (315/75/16s) like Pikeman mentioned.

I'd say either are good, but if you are on the stock rims the do 255's w/ spacers. brian2sun mentioned he liked having the spacers because it gave him more stability with the tall skinnies. You are right, I have mentioned that the 255s are a little more stable with wheel spacers. When you lift it 3 or 4", and actually go to skinnier tires (stock tire are 265mm wide), the center of gravity goes way up! I ran 1" spacers with my 255s to help with that.

Now, my 35s are 2" wider than stock tires (1" on the outside of each tire) and I'm still running the 1" spacers. So effectively, I've increased my track width by 4" from stock and lifted it 4" from stock (retaining my original COG). The only additional height I've gained that actually affects my COG is the taller tires themselves, which are about 4" taller than stock 265/70/16s.. and only 1/2 of that affects the vehicle height. So I'm about the equivalent of a 4runner with stock tires and a 2" lift. This is all stuff to think about when you lift a truck. My truck is actually a little less tippy now with 315s than 255s, even thuogh they are a lot taller tires..

Brian2sun went to 35's not 285's(33's). I have been running the 285's and really wanted to go to the 255 and so do a lot of other people. I think you'll like the 255s a lot.
