May be out of the 4runner game

I love my 13 trail like no other. finally had all the mods I wanted. Well my wife was driving it to work as it's her 4runner after I bought my pickup. Another driver next to her hit the slush lost control and pushed her off through a highway sign and in to the trees. The 4runner did it's job and she walked away with a big bruise on her leg from the knee airbags and some seat belt rash. If she was in a sedan or smaller suv this would have been so much worse for her. Hell even a stock 4runner she might have been bad.

I'm on the fence if its totaled or not. She sheard of a 8in diameter tree. The gobi rack saved the roof line and windshield.

Seems like the damage stops at where the bumper support bolts into the frame. no fluids leaking other than antifreeze and wheels still steer both ways and suspension is sitting right.

sucks as its hard to find a Kdss model out there. But these things hold their values!

Thats tough man - glad the wife's alright. I had a Rav4 way back when and walked away from a pretty terrible accident too. Really happy with this brand.

If it is totalled, are you thinking about getting another?

My neighbor rolled his truck a few weeks back from Black ice. It was a very clean '10 Duramax lifted on 37's with bumpers, winch, ect. I talked to him before the tow truck came...he had no idea that the insurance might not pay out on his mods if he didn't have a rider in the policy....ten minutes later he out there pulling off his road armor bumper and winch, but for some reason left on his brand new 37's. I mentioned he should negotiate with the insurance to make sure they paid out in his stuff..so he can either buy more for another truck or transfer to hi same new one. Haven't talked since, so don't know how it turned out for him.


Best of luck...since you were hit, make sure they pay for the stuff or get some of it off before it goes to the yard to be stripped. :doh:

There's a VERY slim chance that isn't totaled, I'll almost guarantee it's a write-off with the airbag deployment and the intrusion. Sad, really...that's a very nice rig!

I guess one lesson here is to call your Ins agent, if you have mods, to see if you're covered. Some mods might even get you a discount; like an aftermarket bumper or armor.

My family always asked me why I stressed that the 4runner is better option than other certain vehicles I was looking to purchase, because of its safety it provides. Since I've never been in an accident in the past *knocks on wood* they said it shouldn't be that big of a factor and to go with the lighter, smaller choices. I just always replied "pray for the best, but prepare for the worst" It only takes one mistake from another driver to mess everything up. Sucks that your in this situation, but at least your wife is alright. Good luck with everything!

I'm glad she is OK, that was probably a ruff ride. As far as the truck goes, it was a nicely hooked up trail, but now it's gone. You don't want it back, trust me. Be sure the body shop it goes to understands they will never fix it to your standards and they will provide an estimate greater than 80% (around there) of the value it takes to total it out. If you let someone fix it....it will NEVER be the same.

With all the damage to the front end, it would be an ideal candidate for a live-axle swap.

Best part of this thread is reading your wife is okay.

Honestly, I would push to have the vehicle totaled. It won't be the same without spending huge amounts of cash. So many insurance companies use aftermarket suppliers for replacement parts which will never be as good as OE. Ask me how I know. Sigh...

Either hold your ground and look for a solid replacement of the same or take a gander at a 2017 or wait to see what 2018 holds. Maybe we hear something next month as the reveal of the new Tundra is coming...

very happy she was able to walk away. that looks to be a much harder hit than my 16 tacoma took and they totaled that so i would think that is totaled. i can only hope you do like i do and get gap insurance from either the car insurance or your bank, it saved my ass when my truck got wrecked. I took the 7k payout and bought a 4runner. hope everything works out in your favor.

I've got a similar truck - classic silver "'13 trail, kdss, nav, weather tech, canvas back for the dog" & a gobi rack/ladder on the way.

Definitely glad to hear your wife is ok!

Completely agree with jspangna: At least around here in southern Colorado, if the bags deploy and there is significant damage, insurance companies mostly deem the vehicle a loss.

Well the verdict is in and my worse fears are true. The runner is a total loss. Guy said he was 4,000 away from the magic number but once they take that apart they will find it between engine work and pulleys and what not. Part of me wanted it fixed but it would never be up to my anal ocd expectations. Quite frankly our family out grew it with 2 kids and 2 german shepherds family trips were getting tight. Ill have somethings for sale here shortly. I wasnt able to keep much off the truck. Sliders gobi rack lift and upper control arms were paid out by insurance.

Things I have off hand right now are
Gobi ladder, sunroof insert, and luggage bars
Canvas back set
Toyota oe slide out tray mat and carpet mat
Weather tech floor liners front and rear
Stock suspension and upper arms rear springs 25k miles and stock front skid.

Just a note for everyone. God forbid this happens to you, but if it does take everything off before your adjuster looks at it if you want to sell on your own. And keep your invoices and reciepts!!

And thanks everyone for all the pointers and how tos. This was a great forum and hope to come back.

One last sad note, adjuster said it will probably fetch 9 10g at auction and end up over seas in south africa or middle east where salvage cars dont have regulations. May even see it with a machine gun on the roof.. that kills me most of all
