Maybe a stupid shock question

Hey guys,

It's been awhile... Last time I posted it was cause of a little oil change mishap. Lol.

Anyways, the time has come to help my buddy out with his 4runner. It recently turned 200k and I told him we ought to go over it and check some things. So I climbed under it one day and noticed... There are NO rear shocks. So I'm like "Dude, you know you don't have any shocks in the rear?", and he says "Oh, that's why it rides a little rough?", I just laughed. Anyways, my real question here is what shock do you guys recommend? This truck sees nothing but pavement, so it doesn't need to be anything special (Like I have on my Dodge lol). I'm just thinking of having him get some cheap Monroe shocks, but wanted to see if you guys had any other suggestion.

Im not a fan of the Monroe shocks but they do work. If it was me and it wasnt hitting the pavement I would look online and get some stock OEM replacements. THey are pretty cheap, got my OEM land cruiser shocks for $120.

He has no rear shocks?? We dont have struts in the rear, there will be individual shocks at the end of the axle, so make sure you are looking for the right thinkg. Without shocks it shouldnt be rough.. he should be bouncing all over the place as well as running the risk of losing a spring which would be real bad..

Yeah, there are NO shocks in the rear. Apparently (the story may have gotten mixed up somewhere along the line) he took it to a shop to have the brakes and some other stuff done. He said the shop said the shocks were broken, so the shop went ahead and took them off. Now of course, it being a shop, they *apparently* wanted quite a bit to replace them. Thus, there aren't currently any shocks on the rear. Me putting new shocks on it isn't a big deal, but I wish he would've told me sooner so we could get it done. I rode in it recently (after the shocks were off), and I thought it was pretty rough. It was bearable, but I know it's not good to be driving around without rear shocks as Jc12 pointed out... And I know the difference between what a shock looks like and what a strut looks like Lol.

The OEM rear shocks are surprising cheap. IIRC they are $40 each from online dealers. Otherwise get some Tokico's from Shox.com. You may need to call in to purchase just the rears. Tokico is the OEM manufactuer but the aftermarket Trekmaster's are not the same exact shock as OEM.
