WOW! Glad to see you are responding to the forum with your result of you better than the 4runner.
For those who don't like the seatbelt chime going off all the time you start your truck. Maybe this will make you guys reconsider. Even though its telling or reminding us to use our seatbelt it is a good thing. Things like this we all can learn from.

It help mitigate the damage to the vehicle, but the ARB is designed to buckle similar to the factory design so it probably causes more damage than say a Shrockworks or Demello in a higher speed impact; but still far less than would be present should the factory items still be installed.

At 50 mph into something like a big tree the deceleration change of the vehicle over time was probably not much different than a stock bumper. I also doubt that the damage was any more or less than a stock bumper.
I will say that in a crash such as this, I would rather be in a vehicle with a stock ARB or even stock bumper versus a more solid or thick bumper. Low speed hits are one thing. High speed hits against immovable objects (even though he moved it a few feet) are something else entirely. In a crash, the speed and the object you hit are the key factors.

That's true, assuming for a minute that had his bumper not taken much of any damage (as well as the rest of the vehicle) the force transferred through the crash would have continued through the vehicle and occupants. Its really a case of the sudden stop being what kills you.
The crumple zones being designed to absorb impact energy and assist in not only reducing the velocity of the vehicle but its occupants, this means that without those considerations the occupants will also still be traveling at a high speed and our organs are not as tightly bolted in as say a dashboard.

Very good answer! Its all about energy. When you hit the brakes, you get rid of the energy of motion through heat in the brakes. In a crash, the energy is scrubbed off through crumpling of the body. If parts don't crumple, it will just be transferred to the occupants. Going from 50 to zero is tough on the old body and as my friend so eloquently put it, your insides aren't bolted down like a dash. Just imagine if you had a completely rigid vehicle that did not crumple in a crash at 50 mph. The vehicle would be fine, the seatbelt would cut you into three pieces.

My 85 runner (first car) suffered a similar fate.
I was on the way to school on my 17th birthday, first snow of the year getting new tires that day. I slid off the road and hit a tree at about 40. Little brother wasn't wearing his seat belt either and got a concussion when his head hit the dash. The front of my truck looked almost identical to yours after the crash.
Really glad to hear you're alright man. Shame about that beautiful rig of yours, but it can easily be replaced.

Thank you for all your regards and concerns posted here. Glad to say that I am back to my "full" self, whatever that really means :madgrin:
I want to say, that for the very fact I wasn't wearing my seatbelt I'm glad to have had the bumper "do what it did" which was by the end, crumple up and crush the front. I walked away unharmed and was able to return to the truck and drive 2 miles home. That's enough convinceing for me to remain an ARB fan. I'll leave 1E and BlackWorks for the physics lesson and bumper comparisons. Thank you guys!
She was towed away Saturday... I'll know more next week. Meantime here are some more pictures.

So it's been a bit of a battle with the insurance agency but nothing a lawyer couldn't get sorted out. She's being rote off. ALL EXTRAS are staying with the vehicle, bar a few which I'm allowed to keep. This is part of the agreement we have made.
I know your next question... what are you going to get next!? The answer is, I'm not too sure. My new job provides me with a car so I might not ending up getting anything for awhile, we shall see though.

I think I can say this, but this is one of the most "human" places on the net to have as a resource and as far as genuine chat from passionate car enthusiasts go. So thank you to all of you for all the support, care and good times. Safe travels and let the modding continue.

after saying goodbye to my last 4runner (2007), going thru numerous cars, the bug came back. if it wasn't for this forum, I probably wouldn't have come back. I would have ended up in a highlander or a tundra.
