You won't see a mule in the US as it's going to be made in Japan...assuming you are driving by the Toyota US headquarters.

Have not seen one concrete thing about a 6th 4Runner being developed.
Plenty of senseless yammering from "social media influencers".
Probably going to wait until the election before they get moving to see if interest rates come down on housing so people can take out loans on home value increases.
Or maybe never and just force everybody who wants one to buy a decontented Sequoia.

If anything, the new Land Cruiser 250 is more or less a well-equipped 4Runner. Very similar in size. The next 4Runner really could just be a somewhat rebodied LC250 with things like the standard full-time 4WD made optional.

No, it won't be a rebodied Prado. Toyota downgraded the LC to the Prado, and the 4Runner will be downgraded to the fortooner.

This makes a lot of sense. The Fortuner and 4Runner would be identical except for a different engine in NA and both would be a variant of the new Tacoma. Mild diesel hybrids some places. I still think the 4Runner will be built in Mexico. they will need that capacity in Tahara to make more LC250s which will sell well.

So, we have for North America:
The Lexus LX is a Luxury Land Cruiser
No (standard) Land Cruiser is available
The Lexus GX550 is a Luxury Prado
The Toyota Land Cruiser is a (standard) Prado
That means the 4Runner no longer occupies the non luxury Lexus counterpart since that role has been given to the 2024 Land Cruiser. If the 4Runner becomes a North American Fortuner, it would not be built in Tahara since the Fortuner is only built in Thailand, Philippines, India, etc...

Based on the current features of the fortooner, it won't have the sliding rear window, it's too narrow for 3 adults in the second row seat, it will have a different rear suspension (the coil springs will be sitting on the rear lower control arms, the shocks are located behind the rear axle with it's upper mount inboard of the ladder frame, the rear anti-sway bar is optional, it has a very pronounced rear sway). so yeah, it will be a huge downgrade.
the Prado is also manufactured in the Hamura plant of Hino motors, not just in Tahara. The Hamura plant also assembled some of the FJCs and the 4Runners/Hilux Surfs.

yeah, isn't the current Fortuner based more on the Hilux? I think it's scheduled for a complete redesign in 2024 though?

Toyota sells more than 100,000 4Runners per year, generating $4B+ in annual revenue. There is no way they are going to abandon that revenue stream. The 4R will continue as a mid sized BOF SUV, with a redesign similar to the Taco.

I am just so glad to have a newer 2020+ T4R that I paid cash for. I'll just be sitting back with my watching everything unfold. Once the dust settles on all this I then might be in the market for a new vehicle.

Here I went with another brand for the time being, really hoping they upgrade the 4runner, with gasoline-only engine as my choice, so I'll hop back into the brand in the future. Loved my 2013, still love my 1998

With the possibility of a bad recession right around the corner it would be prudent to just keep making the 5th gen imho.
The huge amount of money that will be spent with the Taco engine fiasco Im sure has a lot to do with it too.
Im happy that if or when the 6th gen does appear it's built in Japan and not built by the UAW. We won't be buying anything built by UAW again.
I expect when our 2020 hits 250k miles i'll buy another one.

The Toyota plant in Georgetown, Kentucky, where my RAV4 was built, is not a UAW plant.
There are absolutely 6th gen 4Runners running around in the US right now. There have been versions for the launch, camo mules have been photographed, a dealer conference just had several, and the YouTube people have driven them (they have an embargo period before they are allowed to share driving impressions). There are literally examples of every trim in the US at this very moment (except maybe SR5... I haven't seen that one.)
The 5th gen 4Runner was far enough along in development when the Great Recession hit that Toyota couldn't kill it even if they wanted. That recession was a full year PRIOR to the 5th gen launching. Since we've already seen the 6th gen 4Runner, it's happening short of some worldwide military conflict. Automakers don't make production decisions like you imply.
What Tacoma engine issue? Do you mean Tundra / Sequoia?
The 4Runner will be built at Tahara with the GX and Land Cruiser. This is already well known. Toyota's Japan workforce is unionized, BTW. As mentioned above, the Toyota US workforce is not unionized.
