means to gauge fluids

With regard to a previously-owned vehicle, could one successfully employ visual and/or tactile analyses to discern whether or not the previous fluids (motor, differentials, transmission) are/were synthetic? And in the event such is not feasible, then by which other methods, if any, could one make such an assessment?

Really short of sending to a lab of some type I doubt you can easily tell. If in doubt, change 'em!

Change em out, its not too hard or expensive.

It doesn't matter, whenever you buy a used vehicle one of the first things you should do is change out all fluids!! Then you know they are new and can specify what weight/synthetic you are running. Kind of a no brainer don't ever rely on what someone tells you!!!!!!!
