Mechanic I trust says I need to replace a frozen rear brake caliper, pad, rotor

My right rear brake started grinding really badly last weekend. Even at 1 mph until fully stopped. Brought it to a local mechanic I do trust, he said I should replace everything, and I just wanted to bounce this off the hive

He said the left one is sticky as well and that I should replace both sides, quoting my $900 and change for the whole job, including parts and labor. Said if I just sid the right side I’d only save $200 or so… and that I’d have to do the left side soon anyway

Truck has 146,000 and had my rear brakes seized up and repaired 5 years ago or so. My priority is safety and making sure everything is in proper working order as I’ll be keeping the truck for at least a few more years, is not for many many more…


Does this sound legit and is that price reasonable? I have no doubt a dealer would charge me twice as much for a similar job

seems reasonable , call for quotes but if you trust that one id stick with it. I recently replaced front pads/rotor on my audi and was quote $1500-2200 and rear pads alone $700-900 :wtf: DIY for about $250 in parts.

I havent replaced a caliber yet but pads and rotors are simple. Caliber might little extra work with bleeding of the brakes

Probably OK, but I'd make sure he's using OEM parts. Even if it's a little more.

As has already been stated, the quality of the parts you use will have a dramatic effect on both the price and the longevity of the repair. Said another way, if you use cheap aftermarket parts, your repair bill will be low - as will how long the repairs last.

I replaced both of my rears on my 2015 at 120k with my local trusted guy and it ran about that much. Made a huge difference in braking performance. Didn’t realize how bad it had gradually reduced over time. It’s like new again.

Not horrible if you aren't going to do-it-yourself. OEM Calipers are about $171 each online. $77 each for OEM rotors. $50 for quality pads (Akebono) and another $10 for a hardware kit. Then you'd have a labor...not sure how many hours their system shows. I'd consider a brake fluid flush/change too if you haven't done it for awhile.

Sadly the calipers are known to freeze up, it's a known issue. If you trust the person I don't see an issue
