Metal clanking sound on start up.

Hey guys,

Recently my runner has been making a clanking/scraping metal sound when I turn the ignition on. I don't hear anything once running it's only during start-up. Checked fluid levels and did a visual check over everything. Should I pull my ignition and starter? Any help would be appreciated. She's a 2000 limited 3.4

After doing some research it looks like a bad starter. I know there are a few threads about rebuilding mine but does anyone know of a good aftermarket one? I'm sure oem is best and most expensive but what other options do I have. I know that if this goes unfixed I risk damaging my fly wheel and that's just more money. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The starter bendix is made of softer metal than the flywheel, so it has a much smaller chance of damaging the flywheel. it sounds like it is indeed the starter. OEM is best, it's worth the extra coin.

Here's a video I did of pulling my starter and replacing the contacts. My video takes the guesswork out of how to pull it out so you should be able to do it pretty quickly. But, since your starter sounds like the gear might be damaged, you might just have to buy a remanufactured or OEM starter, or see if you could actually buy a replacement gear and install it. OEM would probably be very pricey. I think Toyota does sell remanufactured starters but you'd probably find it more affordable at a place like O'Reilly.

Update:

Ok guys the problem either has gotten worse or I have another problem on my hands. I went to start the runner right now and its starts just fine but now it's making a whining noise. The noise comes and goes every few seconds and is a whining noise coming from somewhere up front, maybe the fan or the belts. In addition to this when I turn the steering wheel it makes the noise and I can feel vibration through the steering wheel. When I put it in reverse it feels like the e brake is engaged. Same when I tried to drive it down the road it feels like I have less power and the noise is still there. Any help is appreciated I hope I can get it to work tomorrow.

Maybe your power steering pulley bearing is toast and causing a lot of drag. Open the hood and have somebody turn the wheel back and forth and see if you can pinpoint where the noise if coming from.

You know, not be insulting, because we sometimes miss the most obvious answer to our problems but have you checked your power steering fluid level? Maybe you've had a slow leak somewhere for a while and your level is really low. I don't know if that would explain the drag your feeling but it could explain the noise while turning the wheel.

I don't think it would be that hard to remove a power steering pulley but I imagine it would require a puller to get it off the power steering pump.

Diagnose the cause of noise first because I'm just throwing possibilities out to you that might be dead wrong.

I guess the route to go with this is take the belt off and rotate the pulley by hand to see if you feel resistance or excessive play in the bearing. Hopefully your power steering pump isn't shot. If the pulley feels fine, I'd check to see if the filter in the bottom of your reservoir is clogged causing the system to be starved of fluid. You can use a turkey baster to draw out fluid and look down into the reservoir with a light. If you can't see in there well enough, you might have to take the reservoir off to get a better look and be able to clean it. Do a google search for cleaning the power steering reservoir and you'll find write-ups and videos. I've read one from a guy on our forum so I know it exists but I can't find it now.

Wouldn't suppose you've got a video on that as well? I assume once I get under there I'll be able to figure it out. If it's loose its the bearing correct?

I haven't looked but maybe you could find one. I'm sure it's fairly simple to find the tensioner for the belt that turns the power steering pulley so you can loosen it and pull it off. If there's a lot of resistance or a lot of play with the pulley, the bearing is toast. Like I said earlier, if the pulley feels fine, I would look into the reservoir screen being mostly blocked.

Geez... Stealership just quoted me 570 for a new power steering pump. They didn't mention it was signed by Akio Toyoda but for the price I can only assume it is. Called some local shops and found one for 119 with exchange so if that's what it is then I'll go there, otherwise the rebuild kits are about 20 but haven't found one with the bearings only with seals.
