Was it easy to tell once you had the starter out that the bearing was bad? Were you able to fix it by replacing the bearing or did you just turn your old starter in for the core charge and buy another one?
The OP's situation does sound like it's hanging up and not deactivating since the noise continues for a while like it's grinding on the flywheel, but maybe he is experiencing the bearing issue instead.

How about I just give you the video and you can get the part numbers from there.
@23:55 play time, I give you the Toyota and Denso part numbers for the starter on my rig. Your's might be different because there are different starters on our rigs. If you have an automatic, there's a good chance you also have a 1.8kw starter and the parts I got will also work for you.

well i went to autozone to see what it was as i thought maybe it was my flex plate, once we has it in there i seen it so yea just look at the nose of the starter and u can see if that bearing is messed up.

I'm guessing you have a manual transmission? It was my understanding that the 1.4kw starters were on the manual models but the automatic transmission models used a 1.8kw starter. If it lists your Denso part number as one of the starters this kit is good for, I think you're good to go. If you want to be sure, maybe go to your local Toyota dealer and verify with them that your starter is indeed a 1.4kw model.
Since the kits I got through the dealer had all the other associated hardware, I replaced everything in relation to the the contacts but it's not necessary. All you need to do is replace the copper contacts and plunger and you'll be good. You can reuse the bolts, plastic pieces and o-rings. You'll probably have to pound the bolt out of the larger contact because it's knurled and wedges into there securely. I'm sure you can just put the contact in a vice and tap the bolt out with a hammer.

Hey, also look at the negative views for that kit you supplied a link for. Some with 3rd Gen 4runners reported the plunger was too long. 27% negative reviews is not a good sign.

I have an automatic. I went to toyotapartslist to get the part numbers so I'll have to look again for the 1.8kw part numbers.

So I guess you don't have the starter out and you're trying to get the parts in advance. That's smart especially if your rig is your DD. There's a very good chance you can read the part numbers off the side of your starter while it's on the truck. I just went out to my truck and I can read it no problem looking through the wheel well. Taking off the passenger side front tire would make it easier though. Get in there with a rag and some cleaner and wipe off the side of the starter facing the passenger side wheel well. Hopefully you'll be able to read the part numbers clearly. I'm guessing you also have a 1.8kw starter but you'll need the parts number off the side to confirm it.

Hope you have better luck than I did searching. Every affordable kit I found on Amazon and Ebay didn't list our starter as one it would work for.

Yup, didn't find anything. Looks like I'll call the dealer in the morning. For reference it appears all 3.4 runners and tacos use the same starter. Only difference is some are cold spec and some are not. Our starters are cold spec and here are the part numbers for anyone else who shares the same starter.
