Metallic, rotational clicking, right front wheel, brakes? l

2004 4runner, noise coming from the right front wheel. It is a rotational click, click, click that goes away when the brakes are applied. I had the same problem a year ago (same wheel). The shop checked everything over. What they told me is they simply tighten everything up, i.e......axle nut, bearing hub, lug nuts. Well it's doing it again. You really hear it when the passenger window is down, and sound is reflecting off of the curb. Why does it go away when the brakes are applied? To me it says it has something to do with the brakes, caliper or pads. Anti rattle clips? Trying to avoid $100+ for simply "tightening" things up. I have had the wheel off, nothing seems loose or have any play in it.

I would check the wheel bearing first. Pretty common problem.

The first time this noise occurred they checked the bearing. which had been replaced earlier, and it was not the bearing. So they just tightened everything up. It's not making any of the growling, grinding noise that I thought bearings made. Why if it's a bearing does it go away with braking?

I just dealt with this same issue about 3 weeks ago. For me it was my wheel bearing going out. I also had that same axle shaft go bad that had been compromised by a missing clamp. The axle shaft was actully bent just a little bit but that was not causing any sound just a slight vibration felt in the floor board and steering wheel. Not sure which caused what to go bad but the wheel bearing was fixed 1st and that totally solved that rotational metallic pinging sound to go away. This is a hard one to solve for you when none of us are there. Sadly it's going to take paying a shop to take things apart to look in there.

Solved the rotational clicking problem, that went away when brakes were applied. Got new anti rattle clips from NAPA and put two on caliper instead of one. The rotor was grabbing the inside pad on every rotation. The pad would ride up and hit the upper caliper pin (CLICK) drop down and then repeat on every rotation. Easy fix. Thanks for the replies.

Have same noise condition & can hear it when pass. window down , will head to Napa . If it ain't still cheap buy !
