Michelin LTX AT2 disappointment. Revo2 bliss.

Just purchased 4 Michelin LTX AT-2 tires. Went with P265/70R17… and so far I am disappointed. :upset: I have drove only around 25 miles, but I feel that I am riding on a ball.. truck has kind of “floating” feeling and that with 35 PSI in each.
Strangely, when I took the corner, kind of hard, it felt just fine…
So I am not sure what to think now…. Maybe I should’ve gone with stock size..??
I had the same tires on my 1996 4Runner (stock size: P265/70R16) and I liked them a lot, they were great, so that is a reason I went with that tire again...
If anyone have any suggestions, thoughts or want to share their experience please welcome.

I had the same tires on my 1996 4Runner (stock size: P265/70R16) and I liked them a lot, they were great, so that is a reason I went with that tire again...

I just looked at that tire yesterday. The tread seemed pretty pliable. The P265/70/17 tread is 14/32 as is the 265/70/16. That's as deep as I've ever seen on a P-rated tire. I'm going to guess they felt better on your '96 because you would have had a little more load reserve with that tire/vehicle combo than the combo with the V8 4th gen especially on the front end. In other words, the tires at say, 35psi, on the '96 would be inflated higher in relation to vehicle weight than 35psi with your current tire/vehicle combo. That means the current tires have a larger footprint especially on the steering end (V8). Max pressure for those is 44psi. Slap 2-5 more psi in there and see if you like the handling better.

Wow,, I had just the opposite reaction to the 265x75x16's I bought 3 months ago. They have been awesome tires with an incredible ride.

Not doubting what you are saying but did you have the new A/T^2 or the prior, original, A/T on your 1996?
By "riding on a ball" do you mean soft? What tire is this replacing?
I was very pleased with the original A/T on my previous ride. I ran them at 40 psi. Give it a try.

I was very pleased with the original A/T on my previous ride. I ran them at 40 psi. Give it a try.

On 1996 I had the same tire (except the size), it was AT-2.
Now ride feels “jittery” and it is not smooth… I am not sure if I can describe it better.

I replaced original Bridgestone; I had over 40K miles on them.

I will try to play with tire air pressure… but at this point I am think about couple options:

1) Go with Bridgestone Revo 2 with stock size.
2) Lose idea of All Terrain and go with HT terrain tires, something like Michelin Cross terrain, BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A Tour or alike, in a stock size.

Please keep any recommendations coming.

Not smooth on Michelin's is weird. Could be balance related, not pressures. Does the feel change depending on speed?

Thats not an aggressive AT tire to begin with. Neither is the Revo2 . Infact all your looking at are pretty mild AT tires.

I have original Revo and it's my second set , but will not buy the Revo2 . Want more aggressive tire.

Michelin tires have always felt mushy to me . Kinda goes hand in hand with the smoooooooth ride.

I just put a set on this week and love them. A great on and off road tire.

Just as an update:
I have tried to play with air pressure, but I do not feel much deference….
Overall, I think what I feel is a change going from HT to AT tires (I release that Michelin AT-2 is not aggressive AT, but it is still AT)….
At this point, here is my conclusion: if I want to get my old and very smooooth ride, I will have to go with HT terrain tires…
I am still thinking… but I start looking on BF Goodrich long trail TA… looks like a good choice, especially for a price.

$145 each at PepBoys, 4th tire free (mail-in rebate).
Smooth and quiet on highway, but great offroad and snow too.

Just want to update my "tire" journey..
After two attempts by DT (at two different locations) to make sure that tires are balanced and round. (and they were both times), as well as my experiments with different tire pressure (went from 32 to 40 psi in 2 psi increments) and just driving around trying to “get used to it” I went to DT and told them that I can’t stand the way my truck is riding.
Tire pressure did make slight difference, but jitteriness and feeling being disconnected from the road never went away….
Long story short I went with 265/65R17 Bridgestone Revo2 in original size.
What a feeling… I have my truck back. :biggrin2: I feel that tires are glued to the road and they are also quieter that AT2 were… go figure. :bravo: And I can drive with only one hand on the steering wheel again!

Remember that new tires will have more tread flex because well... they have tread as opposed to the worn tires that were on the vehicle.
