Michelin X-Terrains

Hello All,

New to the forum and need some help. I have an 04 Limited V8 with 58,000 miles that I just swapped the original Duelers for X-Terrains. The dealership did the work and also balanced and aligned the truck. I have had them on for two days now and am experiencing slight howling/road noise on the highway. From past experience with Michelin, noise hasn't been an issue but these do. The car also feels a bit loose/wobbling on the highway. I have done a visual check and everything seems OK. Tire pressures are at 35.

Any ideas? I plan on taking back this week, but thought I would do some due diligence in the meantime. Has anyone else experienced this with X-Terrains?

I had xterrains and they are awesome tires but way too expensive. Did you have new or used tires installed? It sounds like they did not balance them correctly, one of the weights fell off, or the alignment is off. I'm surprised they are noisy if they are new, mine were very quiet on the highway until 50K+ miles.
 
Yes, brand new installed at a local reputable Toyota dealership. 4 new tires, balance and alignment for $950. I was very surprised they had this much highway noise to. I had the LTX M/S on a different vehicle and they were great.
 
If you mean Michelin Cross Terrains, I have a set on my 4th Gen I bought used a few months ago. They already have a lot of miles on them, but I am VERY impressed with them. Even though the tread is down to maybe 10,000 miles (my estimate) left, they are VERY quiet, and still handle very very well in dry or wet, in spite of minimal tread remaining.

I would buy another set of them in a heartbeat, and probably will.
 
Back on the 1st of December I installed a set of Michelin LTX M/S 2's.

I too thought they rode a bit rough and seemed loud.

I found that the installer had put nearly 40 lbs of air (32 is the recommended). It still seemed to vibrate a bit, so I had them re-balance and all is GREAT now. No more noise, no vibrations and the ride is great.

New tires may be a little louder at first compared to old tires because of the tread depth and rubber nubs(?) on new ones but they should ride smooth. Probably not balanced properly(could be the balancer is out of tolerance), or it is possible to get a faulty tire. Out of round, slipped belt etc. Take it back and don't settle til it's fixed. The Cross terrains are a fantastic tire. I'm surprised you are still able to get them since they are discontinued, replaced by a new LTX if I recall correctly.
 
Great tires

The Cross Terrains are awesome! After my first set (they only have 16k so they may last nearly forever) I will only buy Michelin.:fro:

When I bought my T4R used from a Toyota dealership, they put new Michelin Cross Terrains on it. Although I was coming from a nice and quiet Lexus LS400, I do not recall an significant road noise from the highway ride in the new-to-me T4R with new Cross Terrain tires.

My tire pressures are usually around 32-33 psi.

I'd sure recommend going back to get your concerns addressed. Could easily be a wheel balance issue. I might even been worried about the correct torque on the wheel lug nuts!
 
Well, I took the truck to the dealer this morning and they had a Service Tech(the guy that installed the tires) take a ride with me. He said that the noise I am hearing is normal and that it is due to the wide and deep tread design of the Cross Terrain. The truck rides great, but I guess I will have to get used to this. I just dont remember my LTX's having this noise. Maybe due to All-Terrain having a more aggressive tread pattern versus a Highway All Season???????
 
i do not know what he is talking about. i just took off my x-terrains last month and they are by far one of the quietest tires i have ever had. the x-terrains are designed to be quiet and have a low rolling resistence so they are better on gas mileage.

BTW you better prey nothing happens to them, michelin discontinued them and they have been replaced with the latitude(not as good as the x-terrains)

Have you tried the latitude? What makes it not as good as the Cross Terrains? I'll probably have to replace my Cross Terrains late this year and was considering the Latitude.
 
i have a few friends in the tire business and i deal with a lexus dealer. the dealer takes the latitudes off at customers requests due the unhappy complaints about them. the two tires shops i deal with also say that the latitudes are not that great in the snow and the HP ones wear out way to quick(the HP ones are the ones our vehicles are rated for).

both tire shops highly recommend the M/S2's. IIRC tire rack even has them on their list of one of the best. i got the BFGs but i am kinda regretting it now as i am using a ton of gas due to the tread and more weight(16lbs a tire). i should gone with the M/S2's.

my x-terrains were fairly new buy my GF wasted the two fronts with multiple nails and it was hard to find the 18" size and i know they were discontinued so i bit the bullet and got 4 new ones. if they still made the x-terrains i would still have them.

I don't care about how good they are in the snow -- I run Nokian snow tires in the winter.

no offense to your choice but you have a 4wd or all wheel drive and you have two sets of tires for the vehicle. why not just use a good set of all around tires(bfg all terrain, general grabber at2, michelin m/s2 or a/t2) or whatever company you prefer. i live in ma too and i have never run two different sets of tires on any 4wd or all wheel drive i have owned or currenty own(3 presently).

all i stated was i have listened to people who deal with tires 8-12 hrs a day 6 or 7 days a week including people who have actually had them on their vehicles and they have not been happy with the latitudes in any driving conditions. how many people do you know who go into a dealer and buy a brand new SUV and bring it back within weeks to change out the tires for whatever reason.

does the vehicle feel like its dragging, pulling, does the steering wheel shimmy @ highway speeds, does it feel like the tires are out of balance?
could you have been on a bad road on the way home? how did the vehicle feel before the new tires and now(compare ride, handling etc...)

the x-terrains are a bit softer than alot of other tires. it might feel a little mushy compared to what you were used to.
