Microphone Connector location behind the dash?

I asked the question but in some other thread, so just starting a new one for this specific question.

Does anyone knows where the microphone wire from the overhead console is ending in the dash/kick side panel or radio ? I can't find where it ends-up.

I searched all over, can't find it.

My last step before completing the installation.

I found it... for documentation purposes:

on the lower left side kick panel, the connector is plug into an empty male connector (no pins).

I unplugged it and then move it towards the fuse panel.
I created my own cable to go behind the radio.

It's the other end of the connector which is located inside the Overhead console for the OEM microphone to plug into. wires are White, blue, Pink.

If you have a nav unit you would have a wire going from this end to the unit itself on the "R10" connector.

In some of our 4runners, there is a plug behind the sunglass holder....on vehicles not originaly equipped with bluetooth/navigation......for those of us who install a factory navigation head unit (with bluetooth), this plug (behind the sunglass holder) is where the factory mic is plugged into.....

Now................what Christian is bringing up is simple. When you plug the mic in, obviously a wire runs to the headunit so the mic can function........problem is, some of us go behind the head unit and can't see/find these wires that apparently must be plugged in...... Christian found them and is pointing it out to us

Now, if one wants to install a toyota navigation unit into their 4Runner, by using this forum, it is relatively easy to do. There are loads of information on how to do it here...........what's strange is the omission of this small piece of info........(how to get the mic plug to work).........MAYBE I'm missing something, I always thought that these wires were already in the radio wire harness. If one does a search, many have installed the mic with the bluetooth steering wheel buttons (along with the NAV unit) and it works flawlessly..........but no mention of connecting a wire to the back of the NAV....makes sense, right? There HAS to be a reason for no one mentioning this......

I haven't started the project yet, I'm still waiting on a part..........but I'll report on anything I see that isn't already mentioned in this forum

If anyone has an insight/first-hand information, please enlightened us!!!! :biggrin2:

there we go .. nice answer.

An other point, is that the OEM mic mounts into the sunglass holder and only the 4runner with Nav have the location for it.
4runner without bluetooth have the sunglass holder without the space for the mic.

I'll try to fit the OEM mic somewhere (or if somebody wants it I can sell it)
I think it would have been better to go with the $50 version mic and mount it somewhere convenient.

To replace the sunglass holder you need to change the whole console (~300$) which includes the mic in it. so it's really "only" $200 extra over the OEM mic only.

Cookie, did you find a good spot to mount your microphone that wasn't in the sunglass holder? I have a 2008 Limited without Nav so I am trying to figure out the best place to mount my microphone.

What Christian did was fit the mic INSIDE the sunglass holder (where it is mounted OEM), but our non-NAVI equipped sunglass holders don't come with holes in the plastic. If you look up the toyota part number, its like $300...... so yeah, screw that! He also dremeled some holes which is what I may end up doing. Not a whole lot of options to do up there. I plan on installing everything this weekend. If I get creative, I'll post

I found a plug right behind the HU.

Hi…. I found a plug right behind the HU that connects with the OEM Mic in the overhead console. I did a wire by wire continuity test and it matches the mic wires. Attached is a pic.

What I’m looking for is each of the wires function so I can make it work with my aftermarket stereo. Any info on this????
