I checked out a GMC Canyon today b/c I thought it might work for us. The GMC site says the rear leg room is 34.7. The 4Runner is listed as 32.9.

But, when I actually sat in the GMC, there is a vast difference in rear seat leg room in favor of the 4Runner.

The Canyon is supposed to have 4" more legroom up front than the 4R as well.

I'm only 5'10" so I dont think that how I would sit in the front of the Canyon would make that big of a difference.

Anyone here able to lend some knowledge on why this would be?

I believe that there is no standard how these things are measured.

I've got a 2018 Colorado crew cab and back seat leg room hasn't been an issue. But then I rarely sit in the back.
Are you looking at the crew cab or x-cab which has less room?

Also, maybe the 2 companies are calculating it differently?

The 23 GM mid-size models are brand new and only come as the larger crew cab with a short bed now.
My 5' mother was ok behind the driver, but I wouldn't have wanted to ride to the mtns behind the driver.
MPG for the new models are pretty horrible as well so it probably isn't the right option for us.
But I really dont want to have to buy a trailer with whatever we get next.

Its on the list but I don't want to buy it right before a refresh - which now looks to be 2025.
I'm hoping they'll put a hybrid engine in it to help with mountain passes. I'm never buying a mid-size vehicle with sub300ft/lb torque again.

I don't think the operating economics makes the mid size worth it. I'll take my full size anytime. A couple gallons of gas isn't worth the having the small pickup. Especially if you need a pickup, even occasionally. I know there are other operating economics, but really? You loose maybe 2-3 mpg, and yes tires are more expensive. But after that? My Sister has a new F-150 hybrid. Recent camping trip with her daughters family. Daughter has a 4Runner. The F-150 averaged 2 mpg better on the trip. The F-150 will tow something like 12500 lbs, the runner 5000lbs, same for a Taco. The F-150 has a usefull load something over 2000lbs, what does a Taco carry? My 99 GMC2500 averages 16 mpg in mixed driving on a yearly average. Some hauling, a bit of trailering, lots of short around town driving and some mountain highway. I drive with 2 light feet. A mid size won't do the work. I'll take the full size anytime for a few mpg. My son had a very nice Ranger a few years ago. He traded up for a full size and will never go back. AS previously said, if a mid size PU works for you, buy the Ridgeline.

Our garage is only 20' deep so a full size won't fit (or it will, but just barely). i'm not parking it in the driveway in Colorado.

I get that. Parking on the street in the Denver area, and you probably won't have it long. At the least, the cats will be gone. Denver metro area is the car theft capital of the country. :frusty:

Differences in the footwell design, like a higher transmission tunnel in the Canyon, could also contribute to the feeling of less legroom.

This is my current issue.....I was dead set on a long bed Tacoma already having a limited for my wife. Having a hard time not buying another 4runner just due to the fact I really don't need a truck bed and can trust the 4runner to run forever. I'm sure I could find uses....but the more you crunch the numbers it seems a full-size isn't much more. Also seeing mixed opinions on long term issues with Tacoma, guess it has everything else in midsize beat reliability wise but that's not saying much.

What a time to buy a vehicle.....

I keep hearing prices are coming down. Or dealers can't sell their inventory. I'm not convinced. But I do see a lot more trucks on dealer lots. But the price you pay for something new and then the taxes. around here the tags will set you back a couple grand year for the first few years. Then the insurance. And I can't see the price of new coming down either. So an older heavy pickup seems like a better deal. Buy a 3/4 ton that has been used as a grocery getter, and nothing will ever wear out. It's just not used (or abused) as a 3/4 ton truck.
