The Miller 211 is a good option. I got one on Craigslist for $1200 like new, though I hate the little M-10 gun, they can take a M-25 like I use on my Miller 251.

Flux core sucks, I’d avoid.

Hobart are good machines, Miller owns them.

I’d have better recommendations if I knew your sons application for the spray gun.

There isn't anything really wrong with flux core. You just have to clean up the slag from the welds when finished. That is the biggest difference from what I've noticed. The beads aren't quite the same as I can get from MIG, but it is darn close. Penetration in the same.

This is why I say get gas, Clean up and porous welds which weaken the bead.
When doing a stress test between gas or no gas, no gas will fail first.

There are others. I paid $800 30 yrs ago for a Lincoln, in todays dollars probably
double to get same quality, Lincoln is not worth chit now for hobby use like
we're talking. To get a quality welder for the long haul, pay once cry once so it will be around for while.

I have a miller 140 with the auto-set which I admit I use a lot. Unless you're working on heavy equipment or doing stuff with 1/4" plate or bigger most 110 machines are fine. Just get a decent quality one you can actually get parts for.

This morning I laid this down with a cheap Harbor Freight 140. 14 guage square tube. A little spatter, but manageable.

I picked up the Hobart 210 mvp a few days ago. I did auto body for 20 years, used to have a old Millermatic at the shop. You could weld an Army Tank with that thing. That being said, I am very impressed with the Hobart 210, lays down a nice bead, and seems to be way more capable to weld anything I will need. I’m using solid core and C25 mix. I highly recommend this welder.

The Miller 211 is a awesome MIG welder, it's easy to use and the Autoset feature is nice. Another good one would be the Lincoln 180 dual voltage.

Well, after not seeing a Black Friday special last year on the Hobart Handler 210 MVP, when I saw in drop to $804 on Amazon moments ago, I finally placed an order. Arrives this Sunday.

I have not welded in like 30 years, and even then I had only done so a couple times, with poor to ok results. Excited to learn though!

Millermatic 211. 110 and 220. Love it. Just picked up an Everlast 255EXT to learn TIG too.
