Mileage surprise

From what I have read here, it looks like the 6 cylinder is supposed to get 18-20 mpg, in the manual transmission. We just did our first fill up, and it looks like I got 22.16. It did 314.9 miles, and we put 14.209 gallons in. So any idea why my truck is different? Don't get me wrong...I'm happy about it. I just am curious.

They are estimates, i can get 21 consistently. If you said like 28mpg i would be surpirsed. They figured there results from speeds from 45-70mph for highway, so thats why its different. Sorry to burst your bubble. And 22mpg still sucks, considering an Dodge 2500 with a cummins can do that...

Ya I'm still happy anyway. I had a pretty even mix of freeway and in town mix. The old lady got 20. So this is an improvement, as if I was lacking in that department. Everything about this truck makes me awesome.

The cummins can do that, but it's still a dodge. The cummins will never be able to get away from that.

A Dodge 2500 DIESEL can do that. Not a 5.9 Gas or the almighty Hemi. All of which are engines I really like. I am a big fan of the Cummins engine. 22mpg as a 60% in town driving is pretty good. Regardless....this is the first tank she's filled up, and I'm sure as she gets to know the Runner better, she'll get up there and just maybe she'll hit 28 mpg :gun4: We has a baseline now.....

When I get over 20 MPG it is usually mostly highway driving. Last month my Wife got over 400 miles on a tank and it was over 24 MPG. She said she didn't go much over 70 MPH. Of course when I drive around town it is more like 18 MPG. So, I suspect you 22 MPG was mostly on the highway.

No, actually it was a pretty even mix, if not slightly more in town then freeway. Since I'm still broken from the accident on the 15th, I am going to rehab 2x a week, plus regular doctor once a week, and I'm running kids around from school and back, and other errands, and that's just all in town stuff. My work is a different location almost every time, and this week it was only freeway distance once. And I visited my parents once, half an hour away. Everything else was close to home.

Wow, you guys are the select few from this site that see that kind of MPG's. Even when mine was stock I didn't see 22mpgs or anything like that... Funny to see this thread when there have been so many regarding bad gas mileage. Lucky guys I guess... also, that's what happens when you drive a stock rig ;-)

When I bought my Runner last summer I picked it up in Cali and drove it back to WA. I got around 340-350 per tank the whole way back doing a constant 70-75 mph.

Now I'm lucky if I hit 240, but it's a super fun 240...

I average 18ish around town. last fill up I got 19.6 around town. granite its a small town so speeds are slower.

last road trip to Idaho falls for a CBI font bumper I got 23 down and 23.9 on the way back. granite going through parts of Yellowstone the speed is slower at 55-60.
but really was very happy with 23.9. and 18 around town. that is chill driving too.
not getting to crazy.

Before I bought mine, after reading these forums I thought I wouldn't see 20mpg. However, after taking some trips I noticed my highway mileage would be at least 20. When I lock my cruise on about 60 I can get 24, I checked it 3 times because I thought I was wrong, but yes 24.

Having said that, my city mileage is normally 15-16, wish it were a bit higher.

Nothing freakish about her numbers - I have a stock V6 and I'm also seeing those kind of miles. There must be something seriously wrong with your truck since you should be getting double the mpg in your 2.7

...This is the most people that I've ever seen on here getting about 20 MPG consistently.

I get around 14.5-15.5 doing my seven mile commute once or twice a day. Going back home I normally get 18-19 doing at least 70. I've yet to see 20 though.

There's alot of factors to consider but the biggest is how much throttle are you using to maintain 70mph and if you're over 80 you mileage will suffer. 2wd or 4wd,5 speed or auto,altitude,stop and go traffic,hills,how hard one accelerates are just some of the factors of MPGs so it's hard to direct compare other drivers unless your conditions are pretty close.

I'm a bit heavy on the pedal and like to get up to speed quickly and I regularly drive 70-80mph on the highway and i get 15-17 in the city and 20-23 all hwy.

A 5-speed gives one much greater control over fuel economy. If you shift at 2800 RPM (or lower), coast where possible, and stay in the highest gear that is drive-able, you can beat a slush-box MPG-wise badly. Unfortunately, I don't have the patience to do that. When gas prices hit $3.50+ I do start to make an effort. It makes a difference.

I'm sure tire size has something to do with it - I have the stock 265/70-16's with 4.10 gears. I'm noticing bad mileage from the guys who went up to 265/75-16's, this might account for the 2-3 mpg drop.

Have you guys changed the fuel filter and/or let the dealer do a fuel injection cleaning? There is only so much you can do I understand but to only get 12mpg in a 4cyl is horrendous. Hummer 3's get better mileage than that...

I just checked mine..V-6 auto and I got 19.34 mpg..That is mixed city/frwy. driving.. A little higher percentage on the Frwy. While on the Frwy. I'm doing 75-80 mph..

Well, a couple of things:

1. Transmission plays a big role here. I had a Taco with the 3.4 and 5 speed and even though the Taco was longer and heavier than the 4runner, I got much better MPG than my '99 4runner. I blame the automatic tranny in the 4runner.

2. Just curious but have you checked your odometer to see how accurate it is? If your odometer is "under-reporting" miles then your MPG might not be as good as you think it is. I check mine with a GPS, figuring that the GPS is probably more accurate than the odometer, especially considering that I am running larger than stock tires (265/75/16.)

Yeah I got 20-21 mpg highway before i switched to 255/85's now i get roughly 18.5ish highway and like 16ish around town with a slushbox. This is with 4.10 gears.
