I've been really curious about this so I did a few tests... the last tank of gas gave me 21.8 miles per gallon... and draining 15 gallons out of an 18.5 gallon tank netted me 327 miles. If I were to drain out 18 gallons I would have gotten 392 miles. Theoretical capacity would be over 400 emptying out the tank.

I have a 96' sr5 v6 4x4 with manual transmission.

That's mostly hwy right? My mom has gotten almost 22mpg with almost all hwy in her stock '99 limited which was over 330 miles in the tank and filled up with a tad over 16 gallons.

When I had my '97 5 speed I saw 30-45 miles better than I see with my '99's automatic.
 
nope... thats mixed city, highway, traffic... but "more highway" than others I would say. I sat in traffic on two 50+ mile commutes home though.

That's pretty darn good, assuming you're hand calculating it and have ran at least 6 or 8 tanks to get an average (there are enough variables that you really need to "average your average").

The best I could do with my '00 V6 was a tad over 22 MPG pure highway before I put the AT tires on. My mixed driving averaged 19-20 MPG some stop-and-go and a lot of hilly backroad.

I just put in a new tank of gas today and will perform the same tests again and report back. My car also has less than 60k original miles aswell and was freshly serviced so that could also be a factor for great mileage... One additional thing I did was air my tires up to 36psi.
 
my latest mpg readings aint so good, but I just changed oil and plugs so hopefully things will look up some...

Hey I have a 1997 4runner SR5 2wd and it doesnt have any performance mods (yet. lol) and i get 17.5 in the city (18 within about 1,000 miles after i get my oil changed and a clean air filter) and i get 26 on the freeway cruisingat 70mph. i came home from disneyland and had my cruise control set to 70 the whole way home and didnt have to change it at all till i got off the freeway 200 miles later and i averaged 28.2mpg.

That's insane. I would like to try that.
 
ok all of you go on ebay and by the fuelmaxx thing. its only like $25 and i get 21mpg city and 26mpg hwy. those things usualy suck but my mechanic suggested me to this one and it actually works.

I only found ones for F150's. It's a chip?
 
Yeah i totally dig getting mpg like that but i'm a 19 yr old guy driving like a granny. lol. I've heard those chips only work for about a month or so and then they become obsolete and dont work really. idk why but thats what my auto teacher told me awhile ago. How long have you had yours in for?

I always get puzzled when I see people reporting anything more than 23-24 highway in a 4Runner. It is important to keep in mind that the wheel diameter can skew the mileage readings. My new tires/wheels are 10% larger around than the stock combo, and thus my tachometer, odometer, and trip mileage are 10% lower than reality. 60 on my tach means 66 on a radar gun, 200 miles to a tank really means 220, etc.

Even after I correct for it, I only get 15/21. I consider 21 highway pretty good, even for an automatic 2WD.

The fuelmaxx comes with a 10 year warranty
 
a few months ago i drove from chesapeake va to chantilly (a touch over 200 mi) and made it back within 30 mi. of my house on one tank. thats with a 2002 runner. i havent been able to duplicate it though. but that was over 350 mi. i was amazed.
