46k on an 06 here and running good overall. One problem I have noticed within the last two weeks is if I put the vehicle in reverse to quickly during a cold startup..... This causes the rpm's to drop and I end up getting a valve train tap for 3-10 seconds. Oil is full with 5w30 and changed religiously. Sitting for 15-20 seconds before putting it in reverse seems to keep it from happening. Either way it's potentially a bad problem that I plan on having the dealer look at within the next week or two and especially while the powertrain is still under warranty.

Krash, this is probably carbon build up on the valves. I have the same problem on my Chevy and my dad has the same problem on his V8 Sequoia. The carbon builds up and is sticky when cold, that is what causes the tapping. As it warms, the carbon becomes less sticky and the tapping stops.
If your still under warranty, get the dealer to look at it, but this is what the dealer told my dad when he had the same issue.
If the dealer can't help you, try running some sea foam through the top end (using the PCV valve vacuum line). This will dampen the tapping, but will not completely remove it.:bash:

I'll give the seafoam or a BG(what we used at the ford dealer) treatment a shot.
What you said makes sense and is definitely worth giving a shot.
This is my first Toyota and I bought it with the hopes that I would be able to get more than 200k miles (what I've gotten out of several explorers) on the original drive train. This tapping has me a little nervous that it may not make it.
I've found that if when I start the car in the mornings if I let it sit for 15 to 30 seconds it's fine. If I put it into reverse to soon. The rpms drop as they normally would but this causes the valve train tapping.
I contacted Pederson Toyota about it and they have yet to get back to me.
Can anyone recommend a good Toyota mechanic/ dealership that they have had good service at any where from denver up to the fort Collins area?
The only other problem is that sulfer smell and I need to get the cats replaced per the tsb also.

That's great to hear! At the rate I'm going I'll probably never see 200K but it's good to know that it's a strong reliable engine and has that potential. I'm at 17k on my 2008.
2003 SE 4x4 V8 208k miles on it, 18mpg with 93. Just replaced timing belt. Engine and transmission still in great shape. There are a few things I need to replace tho. Rear shock suspension rusted through due to salt in the winter, one of the control arm ball joints is worn and the whole arm needs to be replaced apparently, and the 4x4 "box" under the truck is also starting to leak a little but welding it should do the trick.
