Basically, I tried to install some new fog lights on my new bull-bar. I jumped the control circuit for a new relay from the 10A fused Rear washer circuit with the add-a-circuit thing. I ran the power circuit direftly from the battery, to the relay, to the fogs, and grounded it to the bull-bar. Everything seemed to work, but apparently something went wrong, and it roasted my alternator. First off, several random systems stopped working (power locks, auto-lock when shifting, really low idle and rpm, slow response to throttle, and then the entire a/c cut out. It wont even turn on and the whole display is gone with the fuel monitoring, range, etc., besides the clock.)I found that out because my car barely started, and a few minutes later (while driving) a warning beep came on, and then lights started appearing everywhere. My ABS light came on, parking brake, air bag, but no check engine light. Could all these problems be related to the bad alternator? (I had it tested at adv. auto. Battery is 95% and alternator is shot.). I would think toyota is smart enough to make such amazing safety systems to only keep primary functions alive (brakes, and engine). My indication to this, is while I was driving, and everything started going haywire, is my radio would intermittently cut out, then come on 3 seconds later. Not like fuzz out, but just stop sending sound at all, then come back. Any ideas?
Btw, its an 04 SR5, V6 2WD. Dads an electrical engineer, and he says I just screwed the wiring bad by freaking out the computer because I jumped the rear washer circuit to control the relay. No fuses were blown, oddly, just roasted the alternator.
New alternator is a re-manned from NAPA rated to 130 amps (160 at 5000 rpm, or something close). Going to install in 2 or so days when shop opens. I just hope its only this problem....
