Misfires and Stalls

Twice now I have gotten the P300, 301, 302 codes (multi misfires) or just the P302 code (misfire Cyl 2) and twice now while sitting in traffic my
4Runner just stalls sitting there. No warning, nothing else and starts right back up. I ordered new plugs and wires. I also have been using my remote start more often now since its cold outside. Could that be the issue or is there something I am missing?

I have noticed slight lose in mpg and hp. When it stalls, there is just the smallest of hesitation. I do need to replace the exhaust, muffler is starting to look like swiss cheese and I am getting the rotten egg smell, which reading here tells me its the cat going.

Any info is appriciated.

Thanks
Bob

I think you are off in the right direction with the new plugs and wires. When were they changed last? Also, the Cats are usually the culprit when the rotten egg smell surfaces. I would have it replaced when you replace your exhaust. Your mechanic will probably tell you it is bad when he inspects it. If you can slide under the Runner....tap on the Cat and if it sounds like rocks or tiny marbles in side.....it's done. Good luck and hopefully the hesitation and stalling is just a plug and wire replacement. Keep us posted!

could be a number of things...cheapest, easiest thing to start with first.......SEAFOAM THAT SUCKER!!! It worked WONDERS on my Gen II when I first bought it. Hesitation, stalls, sputtering stopped INSTANTLY.

***update***

Update: Installed new Denso Dual Prong Spark Plugs and NGK Wires, cleaned throttle body and MAF Sensor and switched coil packs around. Install went easy, started up fine. Before I started it, I cleared the codes and noticed that I had 4 codes, P300, 301, 302 and now 303. Now, no more check engine light.

Cleaned the heater fan and used my remote start to start it and there it was, the check engine light AGAIN. 1 Code, P302. Could this be the Remote Start or a bad injector?

I also ordered a new Magnaflow Cat and Muffler from Performace Peddler.com due to my muffler being swiss cheese.

I will update this after I install the new cat and muffler.

New Update

Haven't used the remote start since I think thats part of the problem. Went to work today, ran in to get something and came out to find the Check Engine light on. Once again "P302". Cleared it and went on the day...only to find the code come back on AGAIN! The engine does seems to have a little miss or hicup in it, but nothing major. RPMs at idle are around 600-700.

Is this an injector problem or something more serious?

Thanks
Bob

No, that was going to be my next mission. Not sure how to do that though. I will have to "search" for the how-to on that.

Well, it's not going to be a quick job and personally, if I were going to take the time to remove the injector, I'd simply replace it. It looks like you'll need to remove everything through the throttle body. When you get that stuff out of the way, you'll see the fuel rail. When you loosen the fuel rail, watch out, fuel will start to exit the rail. Simply unplug the electrical connector and the injector (IIRC, there is a clip that holds them in place) and replace/swap the injector that is in question. When you install/reinstall the injectors, put some vaseline on the o-ring. The o-rings need to be lubed or they will tear when you reinsert them. Reinstall all of the other parts. While you have it disconnected, you might as well clean the throttle body on both sides.

To my understanding, 302 was cylinder #2 misfire. You can always have the code read at an auto parts store with an OBDII reader and they should be able to tell you what cylinder is misfiring...

**update #2**

Ok, so as of now I have installed NEW Denso Plugs, NGK Wires, Magaflow 91005 Catalytic Conveter and Magnaflow Muffler 12286. I used the remote starter for a few days and just key start for a few days...here are the results:

Weather conditions in Delaware have been very cold (30F-35F during the day and 20f to 5f during the nights with wind chills to 0F to -2F)

-Remote Start: Usually popped the P0302 code everytime. Ran like crap, sputtered, loud exhaust sound, shook, till i stopped and restarted with the key OR revved the crap out of it.

-Key Start: Some days no code and some days (like this morning) just like I used the remote starter. Started fine, I let it warm up for about 5 mins, go back out to it and....theres the CEL. Use the reader and P0302. runs like crap till you get it moving and run it.

I have not had a chance to look over the engine to look at hoses and things like that. This is really starting to piss me off. I don't want to go to a dealer, but I think I may have to, to get them to use there reader to figure it out.

Anyone have any other idea's what it could be.

Thanks
Bob

Just throwing this out here but I would have a compression test performed ASAP......All the codes you are explaining can mean any number of things....some easy to fix others Really expensive to fix... Had similiar issues on my 3rzfe motor @ 67k miles and it turned out to be a massive issue of burnt valves partially caused by a really small exhaust leak and something else I cant explain... like i said just throwing out suggestions to look into. Dont wait to long because the longer you wait the worse it gets trust me....

Just replaced the fuel filter a few months ago.

Bought a compression tester tonight, hopefully will work on it tomorrow night.

I am going through the same thing right now
Acouple of months back I had that small shuddering at around 55 (CEL read 3 cyl mis) new plugs wires and a coil pack fixed it
This morning I fired it up and got a real bad misfire and shaking CEL flashing I stopped and got the CEL read and it was #2 misfire ok I said I'll replace that coil pack and that should fix it ....... no dice pulled the plug it fired it up and it sparks
I am at a loss so off to my mechanic I go i hope it is not terminal only 245k on the clock :)

Don't know that a spark @ low RPM will get you the consistent spark you need at 55mph. I would still suspect the coil is not keeping up. You can swap the coils around and see if the misfire follows the coil.
