Hello guys, I have a 02 SE with 115k, I want to drain and fill transmission this weekend, but I don't know what's in there since I recently bought it, assuming it has NON synth and I want to fill with synthetic, is this ok? Would I blow it? And also I know it needs DEXIII and many people recommends amsoil, what's your opinion about Mobil1?

Mixing is fine. I haven't used Mobil 1 but I'm sure it's okay as long as it's Dex III compatible. I use Dex VI

I would recommend Valvoline MaxLife ATF. It's a great ATF, and it mixes fine with non-synthetic. It's also not too super expensive. My 4Runner drives and shifts great with it.

thanks for answering, I'll shop around and check this forum to see wich brand i buy, NOW drain and fill will get about 4qts out, i'm thinking 3 more drain and fill will within next three weeks will get most of dirty oil out, am i right?

i also use the valvoline maxlife.... can get it for pretty cheap at local walmart. i bought my 4runner used with about the same mileage as yours. im at 161k now and the damn thing is so smooth just like when i bought it. i also just do the drain and fill method. good luck

hey kball you have been very helpful on the site. i've used your advice for many different things. and by the way, within the next 3 months I will be moving out of AZ and coming back to my hometown of Orange County. Probably living near Cypress. Take it ez

ok guys, I'm happy to report the following: transmission oil CHANGED!, drain and fill, with 4qts Amsoil Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid , both differentials and transfer oil, CHANGED! with Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90, driveshafts LUBED!, total cost fluids and some tools i didnt own, less than $250., I went to a transmission repair shop and asked them, how much all of this services would cost me and they wanted $600!!, man i saved some money, i took all seats out before i started and my wife steam vac the carpet and seats while i was working under the truck, so now it's smelling good too!!, next weekend if time allows: sparks, cleaning MAF and throtle and another transmission drain and fill, ( fluid was really dark so i want to do another two to clear it up). Any suggestions on what else to check while i work on the engine?

Saved money and new tools to boot! Not to mention a wife that likes to help out on the truck. :trophy:

The things you mentioned sound good. Make sure you get the right plugs and do the wires too.

Add an air filter and you have pretty much covered the basic 30K. Then you might check pads and shoes and I flush brake fluid every 2 years or so. Coolant flush after 30-50K depending on whom you talk to and the color you run. Lube up the throttle cables, hood and door latches and hinges and call her good to go.

Next time drop the trans pan and replace the filter. There are 4 magnets in the pan to collect any metal shavings. These need to be checked and the entire pan cleaned out. Don't be alarmed by clutch residue build up, it's natural in all A/T. Only thing to be worried about is larger metal shavings/flakes (fluid should NOT look like it has glitter in it).

When you clean the throttle body, due it the right way by removing it and cleaning the IAC (idle air control) as well. Preventative maintenance.

I have never had the throttle body off my engine in 11 years and 130K miles. This write-up Throttle/MAF Cleaning pretty much describes my approach, except I follow the FSM and use compressed air to blow out all the passages and apertures in the TB, including the capped clean-out tubes on top. NOW you know what those are for.

The FSM also clearly states on page SF-33 of the '99 edition:

NOTICE: To prevent deterioration, do not clean the throttle position sensor and the IAC valve.

....so I don't.
