MLK Weekend 1/12-1/15 - Mid-Atlantic Winter Camp Trip

Date: Friday, January 12 - Monday, January 15 (MLK Weekend)

The plan is to head out Friday after work and find site on the trail. Folks can arrive or leave earlier/later as they please. Depending where people are coming from, we can coordinate meet-up locations to drive up in groups. We'll arrive Friday evening, set up camp and settle in. Sat-Mon we'll hit various trails and spots like Lindy Point, Blackwater Falls, Olson Tower, etc. Maybe hit a few breweries/wineries depending on if folks want to go - everyone is of course free to do their own thing. If you're interested, just post below and we'll get the list put together.

For the lurkers out there, I was thinking about maybe cutting west on a Saturday Morning, head towards Spruce Knob WV, then come back towards Dictum Ridge, Flag Pole, Reddish Knob, etc., camp there for the night then hit some of those trails on Sunday. I'm not married to the idea and would be down to go north, I just don't have too much info on the trails up there. Happy to take in other ideas though as GWNF can get played out after a while, but I haven't gone in the winter so that'll be a new wrinkle.

Will do. Canaan Loop should be feasible depending on what the snow situation looks like. If you're from PA and have experience in snow I think you could do ok.

I am coming from south central PA. The quickest route for me has me coming down 68 from PA through MD to WV. 2.5 hours depending on route. I thought I saw a member from philly. That would probably be a similar route after 76W (PA turnpike). I actually live about 6 miles from the TP. Whatever works for others should be good with us.

TBD on when the office is going to close, but if it closes around 2pm, I'd bet we're probably on the road by 3pm, Davis by 6pm.

Friday we'll have folks mosey in at their own times since we're all coming from a different location. The biggest question mark is settling on a campsite. Our office unfortunately won't be closing early, but I'll probably head out a little later than originally anticipated - we'll probably get to Davis around 8pm though. What time was everybody else shooting for in regards to arrival times? I'm more than happy if someone with previous experience on the loop has the coordinates for a recommended campsite to chime in and we can have that be our meetup spot.

If not, and folks are willing to get there around that time I'd say we can shoot to meet up in Davis and ride in together. Thoughts from those that are still planning on going?

I believe another group from the forum recently went out to Canaan Loop. That could be a good resource for campsite specifics along the loop. I did see that they headed out that way, looks like they camped a good bit farther south though - closer to Flagpole. If most of us get in around that 8pm hour it should be real easy to meet up at the trail entrance, drive in and find a spot. We'll see how others are planning on coming in.

OP's been updated with a more "concrete" plan - it's of course open to change as the group would like. I'd be down to do a trail run that Sunday afternoon if others are open to it.

39.08718, -79.54472 Is decent campsite on the loop. Flat enough for 4-5 vehicles spread out in the woods. I would join you but I spent this last weekend with Blue Ridge Overland Gear and I don’t think my family would be happy with another trip.
