Moab In June

Hello runners, My son and I and momma are takin a Vac. week up in Moab from the 20 th on and being nubies we will be touring the sites and off- roading of course . Was lookin for any and all pointers and food, lodging and sites .:guitar2: Thanks

I hear Fins n' things is a fun slick rock trail. Gemini Bridges is alright, not very technical, but cool landmark and view. Arches national park has a decent trail out to Tower Arch, and you can take deep sand on the way back from it. In Canyonlands, you can take Shafer trail down to White Rim and then down to the Colorado at some point.

I tried Dome Plateau, but you will need a good spotter and even then you may scrape.

Sounds like Egstyle's the go to man for Moab info. I may be up that way in July myself as I have 5 weeks VC penciled in starting July 1st.May have to look you up as it sounds as if you live in 4x4 heaven!

First driving back to Pittsburgh to see family,stay at my sisters lake house and wheel my old stomping grounds in the mountains.Then heading west to Yellowstone before heading south again.Last year I drove almost 5000 miles on my vacation.

The wife and I are heading to the San Juans (Ouray) and Moab last 2 weeks of June and early July. There are just too many trails to explore in both of those areas, but I've done quite a few around Ouray and Silverton. Moab and the Needles District of Canyonlands look awesome and I can't wait to get out there.

Charles A. Wells has a great series of books on 4-wheel drive trails including an entire book on the Moab area. I highly recommend them. Trail ratings, maps, descriptions, and GPS points are included along with lots of other useful info. I have about 5 of his books. When I get one, the first thing I do is take it to OfficeMax and have them cut the binding off and punch it for a spiral. Then the books lay flat and fold for easy use by your navigator while on the trail!

I'll recommend The RedStone Inn if you're looking for a motel break; clean, quiet, relatively cheap, and friendly staff. Walking distance to eating, etc., and of course close to Arches. The Golden Stake (Steak) is across the street when you get the desire for scrambled eggs and greasy bacon:hungry:

I'm heading back to Moab in a few weeks. Gotta get my 4runner initiated.

I'd recommend Red Cliffs Lodge along the Colorado River... its close to town, but you avoid all the tourist BS of Moab. There's a lot of lodging to be had - but be sure to plan ahead - the summer months can make it difficult to secure a room. Camping along the Colorado is also great.

There's lots of fun to be had in Utah. Be sure to stop by the Hieroglyphics along the Colorado River - just NW of Moab. Seriously cool and great off-roading as you go further along the river. I suggest off-roading (or mtn. biking) during the day and be a tourist @ Arches 2 hours before dust or around dawn - frickin amazing. Rafting the Colorado is also excellent.

The Mexican restaurant (next to the large rock shop) on the main drag (north side of town) is excellent. Avoid the "pancake haus" and head to Denny's... Denny's is actually good in Moab... dunno why.

You really can't go wrong. Have a blast.

Right on, man. I'd be down for a 5th Gen expedition.

I've only been to Moab a couple times, so I don't know the area through and through by any means. Not yet at least! There are an insane amount of trails. There are so many challenging trails that you will go home wanting to upgrade your truck for the next time.

Moab will be hot in July.

I can't wait to get back down myself for the next sunny weekend we have, hopefully this one! I'm also pumped for the higher elevations to thaw out for those mountain trails! Uintas, Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier... :jump:

Hey Runners, Thanks for the input, now I have another dilemma, Do we change the tires on the Trail before we head up to Moab, and what other sure things should we bring. We are coming out of Los Angeles and heading north for 400miles , so thats alot of pavement before we hit dirt and were still up in the air about which tires. :ybrick:

If you're just going to drive down dirt roads and avoid mud, rockclimbing, creeks, or getting close to cliff edges on slanted surfaces, then don't worry about the tires except for looks.

If you are interested to play on that stuff, get 265 KM2's if no lift. They leave you with no doubts. Clearance and deep water is the only issue then.

From what I read on TrailDamage.com - All Trails, 3's are about as difficult you'll possibly want to push it in a brand new ride. Some of them I think are do-able, some not. I thought Dome Plateau, rated a 3, would require serious, careful climbing. Definitely with a spotter or two. Good trail descriptions anyhow, check em out and see what sounds cool to you.
