Moab to Winter Park Overland

Hey guys,

I am trying to plan a trip for next summer going from Moab to Winter Park, CO. I'm really wanting to touch as little pavement as possible. I was curious if anyone has made this trip and how you did it? Or where I could find a route of trails?

Wow am I following this. That sounds amazing except I'm leaving from NY haha.
Amazing riding out there winter park was fun! And never been to moab
 
Sub'd, Winterpark is awesome, check out Keystone too as it's not a far drive if I remember correctly!
 
Welly well, my back yard.

It really depends on how you want to get from Loma/Grand Junction out to Grand County.

Really only 3 ways -

  • I-70 to US 40, Berthoud Pass
  • I-70 to CO-9 (Silverthorne)
  • Northern Route through the Steamboat Springs area

If you take US-9 you could jump off on to CR-3 to CR-32 to CR-50 which will take you all the way through Grand County to Fraser/WP on dirt.

Be careful of your timing though, some of the snow on the really remote roads still hangs around into July.

Thanks for all the help guys! Definitely going to hit a lot of what you guys said. Going to do Kokopelli from Moab to Grand Junction, cruise on over to Glenwood Springs and hit the part north of i70 of the route [MENTION=63986]Volcom[/MENTION] shared. Cruise down US-9 a little and hit the CR-3 to CR-32 to CR-50 over to Fraser that [MENTION=79561]CO-Cygnus[/MENTION] mentioned. Gonna be a fun week! Thanks again!
 
If you going to be in Moab you absolutely must drive through Canyonlands White Rim trail. It is an all day drive though, probably 9-12 hours if you go at a solid pace.

Best scenic road I've ever been on. Simply amazing.

I took lots of pics on my last trip. I liked it more than my grand canyon trip.

To do it though you will need 1 night in Moab then wake up and start the trail at 8am. Then you'll need a campsite in Moab to sleep after a long day of driving. You can make two days of it but getting an overnight permit will be hard since the tour groups buy them all up (it's BS).

This road is the crown jewel of Moab from a scenery perspective.

Another question for you guys. My friend and I will be doing this trail West to East so we will be detouring around Rose Garden Hill by doing Onion Creek and then swinging around up to Top of the World then continuing on to Fruita.

My question is how much extra fuel should we bring? I've got a 2016 4Runner and he has a 2015 Tacoma. I'm guessing with the detour included we will do about 180 miles. We've both done a great deal of off-roading but nothing as long as this trail.

What trail are you referring to, several were mentioned above. You can gas up in Moab. I always bring a 5 gallon gas reserve.
 
Ah right you are. We will be doing the Kokopelli Trail. Going from Moab to Fruita. But detouring around Rose Garden hill by doing Onion Creek. Before crossing the Dewey bridge we will run to TOTW and then continue on to Fruita.

I've ran from Dewey Bridge to Moab in my 84 4Runner on 40's all on one tank of gas. We also detoured to TOTW. I still had plenty of fuel. You should be ok fuel wise running that route. You staying on the Kokopelli all the way to Frutia or jumping on the highway?

Right on. Thanks! And planning on running the Kokopelli all the way to Fruita. I'm from Texas so I don't know that local area but the maps I've seen that is where it ends.
