Mobil 1 vs. Pennzoil Platinum

It used to be the Mobil 1 was the darling of many Toyota owners, but perhaps that's changing. I've been reading over on the bob-is-the-oil-guy forum that Mobil 1 has somewhat fallen out of favor these days. It seems that mother Exxon has tweaked the formulation of Mobil 1 some. (Somebody on this forum mentioned that indeed saw the specs had changed a little.) They are saying the new formulation is not as good, and maybe isn't even full synthetic any more.

In any case, many are saying that for the price, another synthetic oil would have better value - such as the full synthetic Pennzoil Platinum 5 qt. at WM for $20.

Does anybody here have something to contribute to this discussion, or clarify this issue? I've been using Mobil 1 since I got my 03 V8, and buying it at WM for around $23 for the 5 qt. jug - stocked up last time the price dipped.

I have seen Toyotas in third world countries go the distance with far less obsessing about the make up of oil. I think it is a waste of time to debate such a minor change in oil composition as regular oil and filter changes with your most basic engine oil will get you to ridiculous mileage and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who makes bad engine oil these days.

Having said that, I am religious about oil analysis on all of my four vehicles and use Motorcraft in all of them. Mobil 1 is still good oil, as is Pennzoil Platinum, et. al.

A further reason not to sweat this issue is that the 4.7L engine is notorious for not being picky as to what oil it uses. My 4Runner will get to 200,000 miles just as easily as anyone else's and it won't have a thing to do with synthetic oil.
