Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20

I'm currently using Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy. I have been a Mobil 1 fan for many years but I don't feel Mobil 1 is what it used to be. I don't wish to start an oil debate but I would like to here feedback from people using Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20 in there 5th Gen 4Runner.

I've used it for years in my other cars including my 2000 Camry with 234k. I use to use m1 but switched as this oil made my car not use oil and made it run quieter and smoother.

I have not done my first oil change yet but when I do it will be with the Pennzoil. I have used it in my daughter's 2019 Subaru WRX and so far, so good. I've heard good things about it. That said, I believe some of us (me included) overthink oil and we're probably OK with just about any good, full synthetic oil. You are not alone in hearing about Mobile1 not being the same though.

Any of the SOPUS oils will serve you well. Pennzoil Platinum is as good if not better than Mobil 1 AFE. Plenty of info on both at bobistheoilguy.

One of the best deals going right now is Shell Rotella Gas Truck for @ $21.50 at Walmart per 5 qt. jug. The 5 qt jug has a $10 mail in rebate, buy up to 4 per household for $40 off thru the end of the year. That's enough for 3 oil changes.

I performed my first oil change last month and poured in Pennzoil Platinum 0W-20. I'll try Quaker State Ultimate Durability full synthetic if Pennzoil is out of stock.

Curious - what makes you 'feel' that it's not what it used to be?

Mobil 1 is like $14 for a 5qt jug with their $12 online rebate.

I'm sure most modern full synthetics will treat you well. Mobil, Penzoil, Amazon, whatever.

Well sure, it's a Toyota. Probably get 46k trouble free using Wesson oil.

You won't see any differences between synthetic oils until you get to the moon.

I’ve been using Ultra Platinum for a long time. I’m quite happy. Check out Project Farm on YouTube, he did a lot of comparison between top oils.

Here's a pretty interesting independent test of most of the popular synthetic oil brands. He does a bracket style competition and Mobil 1 didn't fare that well (lost in the first round while Pennzoil and Amsoil made it to the finals).

Consider this....there isn't an oil for sale that can't stay in spec for 5K no matter how basic. Even that oil in the ''hardware'' isle at Ralph's for $3. ANY one of the Synths will be good to 10K in normal, non-race conditions. So, if you change your oil by 10K or less (7500 for Me) you are fine......and the engine isn't supposed to run metal to metal as it surfs that wedge of oil. In the brief time it does on start-up or an extreme shock load, that is when the additives kick in for extreme protection as they are just along for the ride in normal use. Oil Pressure and supply is far more a factor in the health of the engine during an oil use interval than the parts per MILLION add pack for wear. Changing the oil and filter along with oil pressure are key over the Marketing Hype we are all guilty of buying into IMO. So far, I have run Mo1, Valvoline and Pennz in 0/20 and 5/20 through mine in the 46K so far. My Mule has run Pennz Dino 20/50 with a oil change and filter every 3K for 37 years and She still Purrs like a kitten!

Add me to the list of long-time Penn Platinum users. I used to use Mobil 1 back in the day, Royal Purple, and others but I finally stuck with Penn Platinum.
Never had any issues with it and every vehicle I have used it in has run flawlessly. I don’t waste my money on that oil analysis bullshit, I just drive my cars and they have never let me down.

While some will be horrified to hear this, your 4R or any other vehicle will last just as long using Walmarts Super Tech/proper viscosity/OCI - as it will using Pennzoil, Amsoil, Royal Purple or any other exotically priced motor oil.

I pick up whatever 0-20 happens to be cheapest at the time I'm shopping. First change it happened to be Mobil1. Second was Castrol. Third was Amazon Basics. Most recent was Castrol again. My OCI is 10k or 1 year, whichever happens first, non-extreme operating conditions. Seriously, don't overthink this.

I am simply trying to find an oil that will allow the engine to operate a bit smoother. I am not trying to over think these oils since they are all adequate in terms of requirements. some oils will have better results than others regarding smooth operation. In my opinion I don't think Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy is one of them. I did learn that many of the oils are now made from natural gas including Mobil 1 AFE. I don't believe this was the case years ago when Mobil 1 was one product and the only choice was weight.

that was also Mobil 1's Extended performance jug of oil too.. the typical green bottle Mobil 1 Advance Fuel Economy is probably a step below.. with all said and done, im sure Mobil 1's AFE is sufficient for 10k intervals

I like Pennzoil for their predictable and valued rebates--makes for a cheap DIY oil change with top tier oil (as per Project Farm).
Change often > expensive oil, easier decision when top tier =/= top shelf price.

I always see these threads and wonder where ya'll find these prices. I consistently get Toyota 0w20 from less than $4.50 per quart. Which is consistently less than either Pennzoil or Mobil1 at wal-mart. I have stuck with Toyota as I am confident in it and it is consistently a better price, and I like keeping a bit of a relationship with my parts guys at the dealer. Any brand is fine as long as it meets spec, but I do think there is some merit and staying with one brand consistently as the additive packs don't necessarily work together as well as they could, and since you don't ever get all the oil out, swapping back and forth all the time effects that. Will it ever make a difference, I doubt it. But I choose to stay with one oil. For me, that has been the Toyota stuff made by Mobil. If I went with Pennzoil or Mobil1, then more often than not I would have to pay more to stay with the same stuff each time.
