Quote...Pennzoil coats your engine and gums it up, causes some serious damage.
These API spec oils are pretty much the same oil. Pennzoil does not coat engines, something else was going on and the oil was just along for the ride. These oils represent a chemical soup. Base stocks come from just a few places and the additive packages come from even fewer suppliers. No one oil is really any better than any other for the same spec. It cost money to make it better and believe me no one is doing that unless they are chasing a specific spec and if they do that, they will tell you that, on the bottle.
So for a given spec, choose the price. If you want something better then you're talking differences and that's synthetic, synthetic blend or fake synthetic, that is Group III base stocks.
These more expensive oils still pick specs, usually lots of them, and for the consumer it's choices that represent some real differences. One of these oils is from big corporation, a factory fills for expensive cars and big on marketing, Mobil 1. Another is sold by preachers of the word and the word is Amsoil. Still another is Purple and it has a secret ingredient, owwww. And last in my list is an old standby, Red Line, a small company, so small you can call Roy the head chemist and talk about his oil and by his hand crafted products.
The point here is, there is not much choice, other than price for the basic API package oils. If you want something different you have to step up into the world of synthetics in all their flavors and colors.
