Mobil1 in my 4th gen

M1-102 is the older filter that is rated for 15,000 miles. the M1-102a is the newer one that they released when they released the 20,000 mile annual protection oils. Basically same filter, but the latter is suppose to be good for 20,000 mile. I have been using the m1-102a filters because I cant find the M1-102 filters locally anymore.



Im willing to spend the extra for the name brand because many of these store brands basically have different oil suppliers bid on the contract and frequently change suppliers. Mobil one is mobil one. Supertech may be pennzoil, valvoline, mobil one, or some other supplier. To me its worth it to have something that I know is consistently similar to the last batch.

I’ve always been a Mobil 1 fan, but tried Penzoil Platinum Full Synthetic after reading a bunch about oils. It’s derived from natural gas and is about the same cost as the other premium oils at Walmart. I might be crazy, but every vehicle that I’ve put it in has seem to run noticeably smoother. Friends that have tried it have even said the same thing. So now I use Penzoil Platinum with an OEM filter about two times a year depending on usage.

I know a guy who swears that every time he changes oil, he can feel the additional horses jumping out. He is a Nissan guy though

Also, to those who say that BMW or whatever has sludge and whatnot, my 2003 Acura has 10,000 miles as recommended oil change interval. It is not mentioned whether oil must be synthetic, obviously. That car has never seen synthetic oil, but only 5W-20 regular Castrol. I wish the rest of the vehicle was in as great shape as the engine is. It did me well though: aside from the clutch (and oil and brakes), which was very expensive because i had to replace the flywheel ($900 at the time) along with the plate, I had only replaced thermostat in that vehicle. That thermostat I had to replace twice. The first one was from the dealership and it died about 8 months after replacement (I did not save the receipt); the second one was aftermarket and it is still there I don't even know how many years later. Sorry, went off topic here.

I do feel like I am overpaying, but I do use Mobile 1 exclusively in my Runner. I also use Mobile 1 filters now, which I feel like I am overpaying even more. I change my oil not earlier than 10,000 km (kilometers, not miles) most of the time.

The oil will always be dark(er) after use in a gasoline engine. That's just how things work. I believe that was the question the OP asked to begin with

Also, 102 and 102A Mobile 1 filters are pretty much one and the same, i.e. both can be used in 4Runner.
