Mod Efficiency and Cost

I 100% agree. The funny thing is that new owners always seem to think there is some magic combination that will overcome the loss of efficiency. I constantly see threads about some new tire being the best of both worlds LOL.

The point is.. pick your poison. High off-road capability almost always means more suckage on the road. All my experiences point to the fact that you cannot have the best of both words. Great offroad tires wear fast and kill mpg.. These are somewhat like the laws of physics.

You can't really have your cake and eat it too. There is a middle ground though. Also, more mods almost always equals more maintenance and issues. OWN IT.

I also wish more people would understand how bad weight is in all aspects of performance. Both on and off, weight (especially up high) is your enemy.

Wish there was an automatic transform button.. but I'm pretty sure those don't exist yet.

I guess its my age but toyota spendt much time and money on their engineering an off road vehicle, why spend thousands of dollars on a proven design...I added a roof rack which I know reduces efficiency also a front receiver hitch for my cooler rack, clearance is fine for driving on the beach and their systems have gotten me out of a bind several times.
Did switch to Michelins as I drop air pressure to 20 and leave it there until I get ready to leave the island and never had a problem....the slicker the tires the better they float and go in the soft coquina sand...that beening said my money is better off remaining in the bank and I'm happy with the trail completely stock......

Gets better mileage than my modded Wrangler ever did, so I'm good!

FYI: LT-265/70-17 E rated Toyo Open Country M/T have almost NO EFFECT on fuel economy.

These are on the stock SR5 wheels; no other mods on the truck.

They are noisy however and make for a bit of shimmy for the first few miles til they warm up and become round again.

Mind you I am not an aggressive driver and do not exceed 70 mph. Off-road they probably do effect fuel economy as they really dig in and increase rolling resistance.

What about safety and weight? How much mods weight is too much?

Hi there, I am a newbie to the 4runner world. I understand the loss off "efficiency" (AKA "MPG" for many) due to the added weight. But could you please shed some light on:
1- the added weight and safety
2- how much added weight in mods is too much (eg. is 600lbs in mods too much for a 2017 TRD Pro)
