[MOD Question] 4runner & Pathfinder spare tire mount?

Has anyone installed or witness a Nissan Pathfinder spare tire mount installed on a 3rd gen 4runner? I would like to try this out but not if this is going to be a FAIL project or if it breaks my bank. I am on a budget but however if it will work I will attempt to install this & make it fully functional. below are some pictures of the mount I found this on my local craigslist.org

I would be wary about mounting anything to the body of our 4runners, I know the 96-02 Surfs had spare tire carriers mounted to the body, I would try and figure out how they mounted it; i.e. was anything behind the sheet metal to support the weight of a spare tire? I would not want the weight of a spare tire only mounted to thin sheet metal.

EDIT: But don't let this deter you, Id be interested in what you come up with.

Is there there any blueprints on the surf that has a mount like this that I could use for visuals? I think adding some sort of a brace to the sheet metal would be the best bet.

I am sure that someone out there has done this we jsut need to hut them down for answers or I might have to do a write up on this if I decided to buy the mount for the cheap price of $50.00

I do not want to spend more then $200 total on this project & this mount would only be $50.00 so I would have $150.00 left over for hacking this up & making it work.

IIRC there was a brace/reinforcement for the quarter panel on the Swing out surfs, i am sure you could forge your own reinforcement.

And thank you, i have been telling some people who are interested in the swing out to mod a pathfinder one.

I hope that when I take a look at this tire mount tomorrow that the measurements will line up for me if that happens then there will ne no reason why I should not try to attempt this MOD

I will be following this thread very closely as I always thought of doing it on my 4Runner but there was nobody to answere it and most of the time everybody said not possible.
I wanted to do it not for the functional use but for the looks

Not I did not & I kick my self in the back weekly for not buying it. I am still on a hunt to finding out if this idea can be done or not I am sure it can but with the right $$$

that looks to be how it latches, how does it actually mount? what you posted doesn't support any of the weight, the support comes from the attachment to the body.

short of welding another plate the the inside of the quarter panel for reinforcement you can just make a massive bolt plate so that the weight of the tire and carrier is pulling on a much larger surface area instead of just pulling on 3-4 point loads at the bolts/washers, so yeah just get a plate of steel drill a hole pattern that lines up with the studs on the tire carrier and run the bolt studs through this new plate and lock off, it'll give you a much larger footprint/distributed load to support the tire carrier and spare tire.

that said it would be nice to see how this is mounted to the truck and see if above is possible or even needed, it could be that the shape of the truck body may not allow for that without forming the backing plate described above...just some stray thoughts :drummer: on guys

if you visit the NPORA forum (nissan pathfinder off road assosation) they can help you.. alot of the folks over there have added the pathfinder tire mount to their pathfinders that did not come with them stock. I had one on my pathfinder and miss it. There is hardwear behind the sheet metal for them... do a search on that forum and you should find hat you need.
