Modified Storage Compartment Mod (removed box & added carpet)

Hi everyone,

I recently did a minor mod on my 4Runner that I haven't seen for awhile in anyones build.

I don't really consider this a technical write up but I still think it is worth showing.

I know I'm not the first to do this but hopefully you all like it.


What:
1) Removed the black plastic inner storage-bin which is just behind the wheel-well on the right rear of the cabin area in order to have more storage space.
2) Cleaned it up and carpeted the area.

Parts:
($8), 3M Heavy Duty 90 Spray Glue
($10), A few feet of Home Depot Thin Carpet


Difficulty: super easy


Surprisingly doing this mod will provide a good increase in storage space while maintaining a 100% clean OEM look. Not quite as awesome as building my own storage bin but hey, its all I need right now.

I just stumbled across this link in the "what did you do to your 3rd gen" thread. Pretty cool mod, Brian.

I've always liked how the later 3rd gens got the bigger storage compartment, and this is a nice solution for opening it up a bit on the older ones.

A couple of questions....first in the pic where you say you relocated the drain tube, why did you go that route and not move towards the back area and down? Second is the grey stuff (not the carpet) is that sound deadening stuff or insulation? If it is did it make a difference? I seem to be getting a lot of rushing air noise from either the door area or the rear comparment...(like some window or door is open) want to add that sound stuff just wondering if it worked....

To your question:

The drain tube just kind of dangles freely in the center when stock. All I did was glue it as shown so it would be out of the way. I did not change the drainage path.

The silver mat shown is from a sound mat mod I did back in Spring 06 or 07. I highly recommend it. Lots of pics on T4R and Yotatech.

If you have a whistling noise you may want to make sure you don't have any exposed holes.

I got a new panel from a buddy to replace the old one after my toolbox smashed a hole in it, the only problem was the storage box was almost ripped off the new panel. I remembered your write up and ended up taking the box off completely instead of trying to repair it. More usable space is always good, and im thinking there might be some OBA in there sometime soon.

Wow i really like this idea thanks for the write up man!! I hate not having any room in that stupid little compartment. The only other thing i would like do is find a larger door and be able to put slightly larger stuff in there.
