Modifying BudBuilt skid?

I'm wondering if anyone has ever enlarged the oil drain hole on a Bud Built IFS skid. I've had my skids off for several months since I'm not doing any off-roading, and I'm getting ready to put them back on. However, I really don't want to drop the skid every time I change the oil (I change my oil every 2 months). And the standard oil drain hole in a Bud Built is microscopic.

I considering using a cut-off wheel on a grinder and making the hole square. I'm not sure what kind of bit I would have to buy to drill a big round hole through that thick metal. I'd prefer a round hole for looks, but a square hole seems much easier to achieve. Any thought?

Its funny cause I just changed my oil tonight with the BudBuilt skids on...oil does get everywhere, but it did with stock skids too! Is the hole too small to get a socket up there? Mine is plenty big for that...

Yeah, I can't handle the mess. The hole is just barely big enough for the socket, so as soon as the plug is loose, oil goes all over the socket, extension, ratchet, my arm, the floor, the ceiling, my eyebrows, my kids toys......you get the idea.


I think I'm going to take Ric's suggestion. I drive alot of miles, and change it quite often like I mentioned. Definitely worth it for me to invest in that gizmo and be able to leave my skids on and still keep everything clean.

Ill have to go check, but mines not installed yet as Im waiting to change the oil, removing the budbuilts are a pain to get off and on, lol
 
You need F-103 or F-103N. I'm getting the one with the nipple so I can run some tubing. Our drain plugs are 12mm by 1.25.

My main dilemma now is trying to devise a way to take the filter off without coating the skids....maybe a custom drip tray that fits right under the filter or something....
 
Looking at the design of the device, it seems like you'd need to be able to get your hand in there to turn the thing which might be really hard to do with the skids on. Let me know how you like yours on your next oil change...

I think I'll be able to reach in from the side....I hope. I'm ordering the doo-dad now...

Still waiting to install. Didn't drive near as much this last month as I usually do, I've got another 500 miles on my current oil.

The quick-drain plug is slick little piece. I just have to find out if I can reach it with the skids installed.....
 
My solution was waaay simpler than all yours, mine is called "take it to the dealer" No mess, no nothin... then I take it to the car wash and spray the inside of the engine and skid with high pressure wash... tada! voila!

My solution only costs 12 bucks and 15 minutes if you don't count the dripping oil cleanup time...but to answer Liny's question, I would have to unbolt and remove the belly plate and the front skid which would probably take an hour...not to mention needing some help to reassemble more than likely...I wonder how the dealer does it with no mess...

they go in thru the side for the filter and they have a huge tub that catches all the oil...

and then I wash it off, no mess for me... and which is worth more, your time and energy or your money? see Id rather pay 30$ every 6k miles and have them deal with the mess than save 15$ and spend my time and energy, which according to my work is worth more than 15$ an hour, or basically, Its cheaper to pay them to do it than if I was gonna pay me to do it...

Seriously? They drop the Budbuilt skid everytime and don't *****? Or charge you for the hour of shop time it takes to drop and replace one?

No, the dealer makes a mess, and then he attempts to clean it up. I have two issues with that process personally. First, I would never pay the dealer to change my oil. Second, we all know that water doesn't exactly clean oil off stuff. The high pressure will push the bulk off, but there's still a coat of oil all over everything. Which isn't bad for the skid, but I hate having oil all over the diff and lower control arm, etc....makes it hard to keep tabs on stuff that might actually be leaking.
