Mods against resale

Something Ive been curious about since I purchased my runner. My runner was a basic SR5 that came with no spoiler, black mirrors, black running boards, chrome grill and SR5 wheels. Over the past few years, I've painted the mirros, running boards and grill to color match. It will have sport wheels put on and HID headlights put in.
I know my mods are very simplistic compared to some of you but you get the idea.
So by doing mods such as this or more drastic, does it hurt the resale?

for someone that's not familar with the 4runner, they'll never be able to tell. The mods will only help as they improve the overall appearance of the car.

I agree. If your truck looks more aggressive it will stand out. But, build and enjoy it for yourself, not the next guy!

I for sure agree with this, but what about trade-in on a Toyota lot? My last 3 cars have been Toyota and all traded in on a Toyota lot for the next.

For the most part, the money you pay for mods are for your enjoyment at the time you're using the car. Unless you remove the mods and resell them when you put your car up for sale, that mod money is usually gone. That is if you kept all your oem parts for reinstallation.

My 4Runner for example has a very narrow market audience. If I were to sell it to someone that has some knowledge of the components and has the same intended use then I could recoup some of the costs. Most of the general public in the market would rather not have the mods I made. If and when I sell my 4Runner, I would be marketing to a very specific crowd.

If I was in the market for a car, I would prefer bone stock. At least with that, I have a pretty good idea of what I have. A highly modded car is questionable unless you have firsthand knowledge of the work done. Of course you can pay a mechanic to go over all the work done with a fine tooth comb.

Totally agree with Dawg4runner, most mods will never be recouped when you sell the vehicle. That's why so many take off parts and resell. Most buyers are looking for the OEM experience.

That said, if you ever sell your runner Dawg4runner, let me know because your truck is sick!!!

Yes, I'm not out to do anything drastic... just very simple but to my taste.
I guess maybe I didn't ask the question right.
I wouldn't be looking to get more money because of the mods I did, I was wondering if it would decrease the value because of what you did.

So what I'm saying is just say I was going to the Toyota dealer this weekend to trade in my gen4 for a gen5 - would the dealer be less likely to give me what my truck is worth (say at KBB) because it's been painted in several areas and doesn't have stock wheels. Would the mods depreciate the true value of a 2007 basic SR5.

I don't think your mods will deappreciate it anymore than it normally would. The mods you've done are pretty much factory options on other models. Mods that will devalue a truck quick are lifts, aftermarket wheels, big stereo etc. Those are the ones that some people think of a value dropper. Like baretta said mods like yours could very well go unnoticed so you'll probably not get extra money for them. But I doubt it'll devalue your truck as those mods would be factory on other models.

Lol....got it. Nothing you've done so far would affect the trade in value. Didn't you just get this car? Why do you want to trade it in so soon?

Oh I don't, I was just curious of how it effects trade-in value.
I bought mine 4 years ago and I still very much love it. Believe me, I go and look from time to time (I love the look of a Toyota!) and I've contemplated getting the gen5, but it's not a good time. As I've said in the past, I'm not the off roading type... sure if it's someone else's runner, I'm all for it, but I freak when I get a speck of a chip on mine. I have a nice size Great Dane that does a fair share of shedding. Therefore my runner gets a good cleaning weekly, and I don't want a brand spanking new runner and a dog.... not right now anyway.

MyToy4, I think you'll be ok. The majority of the sales rep don't even know the products they're selling and these are new vehicles with plenty of literature available to them. For a used vehicle, I highly doubt they'll figure out the subtle mods. Just tell them it's a "SR5 Limited" like one of the CL ads posted here recently.

I've only tried with one vehicle, but I had about $1500 in stereo stereo equipment in an old cherokee. They took the vehicle back for inspection, gave me a trade-in value. I showed them the reciepts for everything I had and said I want half or I return it to stock. They said ok. Everything was over 2 yrs old and would of never been able to get that much for it reselling it myself. Sales guy said, it made the truck different and would probably have more appeal at an auction, plus I was buying a vehicle from them so they were gonna make it back off the interest with my vehicle loan. Its worth a shot to ask for a little more when trading-in, ya never know. Plus, I threw out all the stock pieces, my bluff worked. Its about the only time I've had the feeling of the little guy won when leaving the dealership....even though I still really didn't

Yeah I saw that. It's pretty sad how many people don't even know their own product, especially when it's coming from a Toyota lot.
I'm an really into dogs too, especially Great Danes and it's frustrating to no end when people purchase/sell and know nothing about what they're getting.
